Madison Bumgarner pitched a very similar game to Vogey's yesterday. The difference was the Giants scored 10 runs in this game and 0 in Vogey's. And the beat goes on! Key Lines:
Gregor Blanco- 1 for 3, 2 BB, 3 SB(4). BA= .136. That was about as good a lead off job as you can ask for. Blanco states his case for more PT. Apparently 3 SB's and 3 Runs in one game is a pretty rare double-triple in MLB. As you might expect, Rickey Henderson has the most of all time.
Hunter Pence- 4 for 5, HR(3). BA= .273. Pence has been showing signs of heating up. He's officially hot now! That should be a pretty big boost to the offense.
Pablo Sandoval- 2 for 3. BA= .203. Pablo has been showing signs of coming out of it too. He left this game early with a sore great toe. I wonder if it is a gout attack? Just a thought.
Michael Morse- 1 for 4, HR(9), BB. BA= .256. Morse had been in a slump.
Tyler Colvin- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .444. Colvin has now hit for the cycle in his 2 starts since his callup. At one point a couple of years ago, Colvin looked poised for a big breakout. If this is it, that would be huge!
Brandon Crawford- 3 for 5, 2B, HR(5). BA= .258. Crawford had been in a slump over his last 10 games or so. Nice breakout here. Can't wait to look up his updated WAR score tomorrow!
Madison Bumgarner- 5 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 3.15. Bummy sometimes pitches with too much command and gets BABIP'd. This time, the offense picked him up, and how!
Jean Machi- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.44. Another multi-inning shutdown for the Machi-Machi-Machi man.
Juan Gutierrez, Javier Lopez- 1 IP, 0 R each. Again, the bullpen shut it down for 4 innings. Romo has gotten to rest the last 2 games.
The Win boosted the Giants NL West lead to 3.5 games over the Rockies who lost to the Royals 3-2. The Dodgers are getting pounded by the Marlins 13-3 in the 9'th inning so will likely drop to 4.5 games out in 3'rd place. The 4'th place Padres got rained out in Cincinnati which drops them to 7 games off the pace. The last place D'Backs lose to the Nationals 5-1 and are 11 games off the pace.
The Giants now start a 4 game series with the Miami Marlins who always seem to give the Giants fits. Matt Cain pitches Game 1 facing Nate Eovaldi.

Brandon Crawford WAR update: He's at 1.0 which projects to right around 4 over a full season. He's currently tied for 6'th among all MLB SS's.
ReplyDeleteThat's fWAR.
Delete1.2 rWAR currently, so about the same.
DeleteColor me IMPRESSED. The Giants played 13 straight against playoff teams and went 9-4, with 10 roadies.
ReplyDeleteThey passed the early season test.
Bochy has been masterful in mixing in his bench players and giving regulars rest days. Although the bench is weak, Bochy has made the most of it. Colvin and Sanchez have been great additions with some power and timely hitting and good enough defense. Belt goes down and musical 1B chairs and still we get good D and hitting. The bullpen has been the hammer, locking down multiple one run and overtime wins, again Bochy gets an A+.
Time to go fishing and reel in the Marlins.
Time to throw some dynamite in the water. Cheat! Fight! Win!
