Down on the Farm: 5/16/2014

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies edged the Albuquerque Isotopes 5-4:

Gary Brown(CF)- 2 for 4, 3B, CS(5).  BA= .272.
Adam Duvall(3B)- 1 for 4, HR(15).  BA= .280.
Chris Dominguez(LF)- 2 for 3, 2B.  BA= .274.
Travis Ishikawa(1B)- 2 for 3.  BA= .227.
Chris Heston(RHP)- 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 9/1.  ERA= 3.28.

Duvall is on a pace for what, 35 HR's this year?  Brown is hitting again, but still having trouble stealing a base.  A very Heston-like performance.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Altoona Curve 2-1:

Tyler Graham(CF)- 3 for 5, SB(16).  BA= .315.
Kelby Tomlinson(SS)- 0 for 2, 2 BB, 2 SB(15).  BA= .208.
Kyle Crick(RHP)- 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 3.28.
Cody Hall(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.  ERA= 3.68.
Derek Law(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K, Save(10).  ERA= 2.60.

Best outing by Crick this year!

High A  Visalia Rawhide stopped the San Jose Giants 5-1:

Chris Stratton(RHP)- 6 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 10/4.  ERA= 4.97.

A QS start for Stratton.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets beat the West Virginia Power 2-1:

Ryan Tuntland(1B)- 2 for 3, 2 2B.  BA= .187.
Matt Lujan(LHP)- 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 1.43.
Ray Black(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 5.06.
Dan Slania(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(2).  ERA= 3.24.

Again, be sure to read the Fangraphs article entitled Prospect Watch:  Milb's Hardest Thrower? and other stories.  It's all about Ray Black and his 100 MPH FB.  The key line in the story is the author witnessed what…."might be the the most electrifying inning of pitching I've ever witnessed."  The article has several videos of Black facing several batters.  Great stuff!

  1. Duvall was finally back in at third. I've been under the impression they've more or less given up on him at the hot corner and would like to sell him as a power first base/DH.

    1. I don't think the Giants think that way. I think they value versatility and want to give their prospects the best chance of finding a MLB home if/when the need arises. They also very much go with whatever the organizational needs are at the moment which dovetails with the flexibility thing.

  2. I didn't look closely at the gamescore yesterday, thought Stratton as usual was puddling along. He actually had a perfect game going through 4 1/3 with 5 Ks and then got into some trouble and let in 2 in the 5th, had the bases juiced on some bad infield play in the 6th, got out with only 1 unearned run allowed. Not a bad game at all for Stratton, hope he builds on it. We wanted a bulldog, we've got a mouse. Nothing could change the minors outlook more than a Stratton breakout.
