Spring Training Game Wrap 2/27/2023: A's 7 Giants 4

Home Runs by J. D. Davis and Luis Matos weren't enough to overcome early pitching struggles as the Giants remained winless in spring training games.  Key Lines:

J. D. Davis 3B- 1 for 3, HR(1).  BA= .286.  Davis got the Giants on the board with a solo HR in the second inning.

Luis Matos LF- 1 for 2, HR(1).  BA= .375.   Matos bulked up over the winter to help get some of those warning track flies from last year over the fence.  He's off to a hot start this spring and this one went over the fence for a 3-run HR to narrow the A's lead to 6-4.  Alas, this was the end of the Giants scoring.

Sean Hjelle RHP- 2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 5/0.  ERA= 12.00. Another frustrating line from Hjelle.  He induced 9 groundballs while the A's failed to get a ball into the air.  Unfortunately 4 of those groundballs went for hits with one a 2-run triple.  I am here to tell you, a BABIP of .444 is not sustainable!

Logan Webb RHP makes his second start of the spring tomorrow against the D'Backs at Talking Stick.

  1. Good to see Matos bulked up and with a hot start..wouldn't be surprised if he really broke out this year (if he gets the chance) and the Giants need it!.... Good to see Miller with a good outing, another guy, along with Smart??/Small? that the Giants need......HJELLE, On the oher hand , has never showed me anything, nd maybe it's just time to move on.............Please No CHAPMAN! Leave 3B to Davis and get a damn Pitcher!!...Surprised we in't seeing more ABs for RAMOS and BART who both might be t the end of their Giant line whle we FZ's dumpster dive speciqls get innings and ABs.......Still, bottom line, No Pitcher brought in, this team loses 90 games

    2. Matos will get the chance. Even if he doesn't break ST with the Team. Everyone likes to plead, "Play the kids." They do. If the kid doesn't perform, I can't see how it's management's fault. After Duvall, name another player who didn't get a shot first with the Giants that broke out for another Team. (I can't defend Duvall not being tried in LF before moving him.)

  2. Oh Lord, there goes Beck. A problem with following prospects is that one suffers along with them at least a little bit. This young fellow looked to finally break into a major-league rotation, a major accomplishment, and now he suffers an aneurysm in his pitching arm. He may come back at some point -- or not -- but in any event this is a tough blow for him.

But I suppose it's to be expected. Healthy young athletes at the peak of their strength routinely develop aneurysms when they ramp up their training. Don't they?

  3. This is almost like watching a sky diver falling from the sky well past the point of where they should have pulled the cord. They haven’t hit the ground yet but all signs are pointing to a huge splat. How is this even possible that we have not one or two or three but FOUR question marks in the starting rotation!! It isn’t like the bullpen is filled with proven innings eaters either and here we are now with 2 of the top options to be rotation pieces already hurt. How is this not gross negligence by FZ? Meanwhile spring has been going swimmingly with very little to be hopeful for unless Matos weighing 9 pounds more than last year gets you going! I’m going to be watching every game mostly the way I would watch a dumpster fire or train wreck not because I have any hope to see a competitive product from my favorite and most embarrassing team!

  4. I'm sorry but I'm pissed at FZ for leaving the Giants in this position for the rotation this late in the game where the remaining pitchers and Agents have ALL the advantage....Winn already injured again, ramping back but??? Beck with an anureysm in his arm...Teng hurt since the beginning of Camp...Whisenhunt and Landon Roup coming back from injuries? And then ther's Ray and Cobb and a converted closer that scares the heck out of me injury wise...And FZ didn't have the foresight that many of us had to see these things as distinct possibilities from the get go?..and the stress it puts on whatever young pitchers make it and messing with the future(are we down to Harrison??)? It may work out if he gets Snell or Montgomey (and raked over the finanical coals in the process) but I think his GMing has bordered on incompetent this off season.

  5. Yikes, thought aneurysm was after the fact (burst), anyway guess its just an unfortunate, can't imagine they would pivot to a 6/8 for Snell
