Spring Training Game Wrap 2/25/2024: Giants 0 Rangers 0

There's an old early spring training cliche, "the pitchers are ahead of the hitters".  That narrative was on display in full force out in Surprise, AZ today as a combined 15 pitchers for both teams allowed zero runs in the game.  Of course, the Giants pitchers have been ahead of their hitters for going on 3 years now.  Key Lines:

Tyler Fitzgerald SS- 0 for 2, 2 BB, SB(1).   I guess I should have included Austin Slater's two walks from yesterday.  Fitz drew 2 walks and stole 3B in this one.

Luis Matos CF- 1 for 2, 2B.  BA= .500.  Matos singled in yesterday's game and doubled on a line drive to left in this one so he is off to the best start among Giants hitters.

Kyle Harrison LHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K.  Dominant first spring appearance for HarrisonTom Murphy C raved about the FB saying he could have used it exclusively and gotten the same results.

Tyler Rogers RHP, Ryan Walker RHP, Cody Stashak RHP, Juan Sanchez LHP, Randy Rodriguez RHP, Jose Cruz RHP and Spencer Bivens RHP pitched 1 scoreless inning each.  Sanchez recorded 2 K's.

Mason Black RHP takes the mound to start tomorrow's game in Scottsdale against the Angels.

Keaton Winn RHP is cleared to start throwing.

  1. I'm waiting for Luciano, Soler, and Lee to appear in a game. I'm usually not that interested in spring training games but all the young and new players are making it interesting. Mason Black is starting tomorrow and they're high on him too. Can they come up with their version of the starting rotation led by pitchers as talented as Timmy, Madbum, and Cain? The potential might be there later in the season with Webb, Harrison and maybe Ray.

  2. TJ Hopkins, selected by the Tigers when SF tried to pass him through waivers, was waived and not claimed by anyone so Detroit keeps him.
They outrighted him to Toledo Mud Hens.
Easy come, easy go. Gotta wonder how he feels.
In December he was traded by the Cincinnati Reds to the San Francisco Giants for player to be named later. Had the Reds claimed him, they would have had him AND the player that was traded for him. Whoever that is.
Being a native of South Carolina, he's probably happy to be "back East" without ever moving West. Unless he did move.
Life of a fringey player with a nice AAA line of .297/.392/.497/.888 and a 25-game ML cup of coffee can be tough.

    1. Considering what the Churn Master inherited, he hasn't missed on too many, the trade of Canario for Bryant may be a big one, but even that almost worked: a bit of success by Gausman in the 2021 playoffs with the Hated Ones would have returned a real bonus as Bryant did very well in that series.
Career of Gausman is very interesting. With all the regular season success he's had, his post season record with 4 teams is not impressive.

  3. Grooming Sabol @ 1B is a great idea: he's big, agile, some power, runs well, and young, 4 years under Wade's 30 years. He has played some 1B in summer (CCL) but it was years ago. He has proved himself versatile.
The Giants are concentrating Bryce Eldridge @ 1B who is only 19 but HUGE @ 6-foot-7 and 223 pounds.
