1. Kyle Harrison LHP. DOB: 8/12/2002. 6'2", 200 lbs.
2023(AAA): 1-3, 4.66, 65.2 IP, 14.39 K/9, 6.58 BB/9.
2023(MLB): 1-1, 4.15, 34.2 IP, 9.09 K/9, 2.86 BB/9.
Kyle Harrison repeats as the # 1 prospect in the Giants system. He caused some worries with a high walk rate in AAA but reports said he was struggling with what seems like a ridiculously tight automated strike zone. Sure enough, the walk rate went way down in MLB, albeit in a small sample. When he is on, he has an electric FB and a wipeout slider and really doesn't need any other pitches. In the long run, he probably needs to keep developing the changeup if he wants to be a top-shelf MLB SP but the other two pitches are good enough he can probably develop the change at the MLB level.
As things stand right now he might be the #2 non-injured SP on the roster going into spring training although it's still possible the Giants add a frontline veteran SP before Opening Day. His MLB debut last season is very comparable to Cainer, Timmy and Bum so here's hoping for good health and a breakout season from the next in a long line of homegrown ace pitchers.
was wondering whether Bishop was going to come in #1, or maybe Bednar, but NO: Harrison! Seriously though, not impossible that either of those other guys could have some prospect renaissance -- Bednar career minors ERA below 4.00 and Bishop career minors OPS above .700 -- not good enough, especially for guys with top-tier college resumes, but not abysmal. Full, healthy, promotion-including seasons with material improvement on those numbers, either/both those guys could wind up being worth something to the franchise
ReplyDeleteA real pleasure to turn to Whenthegiantscometotown each day for a month and a half & get an insightful focused breakdown of the farm system. thank you!
ReplyDeleteHarrison excites the hell out of me and I hope he is in SF to stay and not a Yo-Yo..I think another top starter (SNELL or Montgomery) would not only be good for the Giants but also Harrison...As is, he is probably the #2 SP and that's lot of pressure..Slot him behind Webb and Snell and along side the SP work in progress Hicks and Winn/Beck, it looks lot better to make it through the first 4 months before (maybe) RAY and COBB...Snell or Montgomery makes so much sense...

I agree.
DeleteI don't get how Corbin Burnes wouldn't have made the most sense. Fangraphs has the guys Milwaukee got as their #5 starter (in a rotation where Junis is #3) and their #9 hitter starting at 3B, and also some draft compensation. Could have had a year Burnes, at $15.5MM, for Beck & Schmitt (& I guess draft something).
DeleteI don't think the Giants hold any tradable draft picks which might have been the piece the Brewers wanted most.
Deletehow about they can take their pick of Whitman, Foster, Ahuna -- that's pretty much level of pick they get right?
DeleteIs it unusual that the Giants didn't re-sign any of their Free Agents?
ReplyDeleteCrawford hasn't signed nor has the sort-of Giant Pollock.
Not unusual or surprising, IMO. I think they really, really want to move on from last season. In general most players who reach free agency end up signing with a different team.
DeleteIt's Saturday: there are just 40 days until Opening Day, and the first preseason game is a week away!
ReplyDeleteIt seems like SF wants one of the Boras Four, but just any one?
C'mon, get off the POT!
Based on J. D. Davis' comments about his offseason conversation with Bob Melvin, unless Melvin was lying through his teeth, he doesn't really see a fit for Chapman either.
DeleteChapman seems to be the one thing they don't need now!!!..A right handed hitting 3B/IF that struggled last year!!!..Now, a LH hitting 2b-SS-3B IF (only Wisely, hah!) would be nice..or even a RH hitting OF (Slater) would work, even a LHRP after Rogers and before the cast of question marks..but, most importantly, they need that darn SP to take the heat off the kids. Get it done FZ or risk a season going south

It would be ideal if Luciano could stick at SS and provide the Giants with a strong offensive SS who is passable defensively. But I wonder if part of the hesitancy in signing Chapman for 4-5 years is that the Giants are leaving open the possibility of sliding Luciano over to 3rd base. He certainly has the arm for 3rd and his bat would still definitely play there. There has been speculation of Luciano playing in a corner OF spot but the Giants have more OF in the pipeline and 3rd base could be open if Davis is traded or leaves as a FA after the season.
