DrB's 2024 Giants Top 50 Prospects: #5 Rayner Arias

5.  Rayner Arias OF.  DOB:  4/29/2006.  B-R, T-R.  6'2", 185 lbs.

2023(DSL):  .414/.539/.793, 4 HR, 4 SB, 19.7 BB%, 14.5 K%, 76 PA.

Rayner Arias was a 7-figure international bonus baby signed in January 2023.  The Giants conservatively placed him in the DSL and he basically destroyed DSL pitching.  Maybe he would have cooled off after opposing teams got a book on him but it sure looks like he was just way too good for the level.  His season ended early due to a wrist injury which from what I have read is not expected to affect his future performance and he is expected to be ready for the 2024 season where I expect him to be assigned to the ACL after extended spring training but I am hoping the Giants are aggressive with him and place him in A San Jose where I think he would do well and catapult himself into elite prospect rankings.

  1. This is the first prospect on your list that actually gets me excited. I hate to say it but up till now it seems like back end roster pieces at best. This is likely what other teams see as well which is part of the reason that they haven’t been able to trade any of them for proven MLB talent. Would love to be proven wrong….

    1. There is a top tier of 5 prospects in the system, no doubt, but I think you might be overly pessimistic about the rest of the list.

    2. you gotta acknowledge at least a few high ceilings among Arteaga, McCray, Crawford, Wisenhunt, McDonald

"are back end roster pieces at best."
      All of them?
Even in the next 30 of Doc's top 50 are some that may mature into good players, some that have shown a lot of capability (Brown) and some that are very young and untried (Ahuna or Reckley to name 2).
It takes time to develop major leaguers, it's only now that some 2018 draft picks are showing up.
Is it fun being a pessimist?

  2. "they haven’t been able to trade any of them for proven MLB talent" — what supports this statement?
What may be surmised is, FZ has valued the prospects higher than others.
Hopefully, Zaidi isn't giving away talent.

  3. I'd enjoy hearing how Dr. B feels the 2024 prospects weigh in against other years. I was feeling pretty optimistic about this group. The Athletic just posted an article where the Giants are the #23 system... Is that really the state the Giants are in?

    1. I don't pay much attention to prospect rankings anymore. The Giants system would almost certainly rank a lot higher if Luis Matos and Patrick Bailey were in it, but they "graduated" last year. Yet another reminder to not get too hung up on the exact order of my list. The exercise is mostly to just become more familiar with the players in the Giants minor league system some of whom we may soon see playing for them in Oracle Park. I believe the Giants farm system is in significantly better shape now than at any time since Buster Posey, Madison Bumgarner and Brandon Crawford were on the same San Jose Giants team. And at the time, Crawford was no sure thing and widely regarded as a "back end roster piece at best."

  4. Yes, like the fact you bring familiarity to 'players', thanks
