DrB's 2024 Giants Top 50 Prospects: #12 Joe Whitman

12.  Joe Whitman LHP.  DOB:  9/17/2001.  6' 5", 200 lbs.

2023(College- Kent St):  9-2, 2.56, 81 IP, 29 BB, 100 K.
2023(Cape Cod League):  1-0, 0.00, 5 IP, 0 BB, 9 K.
2023(ACL):  0-0, 0.00, 4 IP, 1 BB, 4 K.
2023(A):  1-0, 3.18, 5.2 IP, 2 BB, 9 K.

Whitman was a late riser in the 2023 draft and ended up as the top rated LHP in the draft with some talk of him going in the first round.  The Giants grabbed him with their second round compensatory pick for losing Carlos Rodon to free agency.  Whitman is a big lefty with a low-mid 90's FB but his best pitch is a slider with 2-plane movement.  He adds a developing changeup which he did not throw much in college.  He had a successful pro debut in limited action. I would think we'll see him start 2024 in A+ Eugene, but he has the potential to be a fast riser in the system.

  1. I completley forgot about him with all the other pitching prospects and the two big bats/position players they drafted before...But may have been the best lefty SP in the draft last year..As you say, could be another fast riser. If all these SPs develop (not likely) Giants will have some in their rotation in the upcoming years and others as valuable trade chips. Keep the fingers crossed.

  2. Mets have agreed to a deal with free-agent righty Shintaro Fujinami.
    Why is this, perhaps, news?
Fujinami is represented by the Boras Corporation.
Is the dam dam finally breaching?

  3. The early returns from the 2023 draft are looking promising. They drafted Whitman to go along with Whisenhunt as top LHP prospects in the Giants system. Bryce Eldridge already made a top 100 prospects list and Walker Martin has impressed Giants with his athleticism.. another topic today's Ross Stripling trade to the A's made me laugh. As of now the A's rotation with Stripling and Wood is more experienced then the Giants rotation. The Giants save a net $9 mil on the trade Cox looks like an interesting multi position prospect. If the Giants don't reinvest the $, they'll make me laugh. If they make a big move or two involving 1 of the big 4 Boros clients then that will deserve a WOW!

    1. Interesting trade. I'll post something on it after I have a chance to meditate on it. Perhaps the A's brass is more impressed with the "death ball" than FZ and Bob Melvin? Maybe a prelude to signing Blake Snell?(fingers crossed).

  4. Does Whitman have an invite to spring training? No better time to throw your hat in the ring

  5. Seems that FZ didn't want Wood, Stripling, DeSclafani, and maybe not Manea, Brebbia, and Junis, or Alexander or Llovera – approaching 600 innings pitched in 2023 – almost 40% of the total.
Is there a Plan to fill the innings besides Hicks, Ray, and the rookies?
Surely, He's gonna grab one of the Big SP's left.
    Or 2?

    1. If he doesn't he is flirting with a 90-100 loss season. You have Webb and then you have question marks out the yin yang, Many kids and a converted reliever all who will all be lucky to pitch 100-125 IP, two starters that won't be ready till July-August the earliest and that's it. There's some upside if everything goes right and the future may be bright with the kids, but this coming season could get out of hand and toxic real fast (Just add the lack of MIF, OF bat and 3 Lefty relievers also!). On the bright side, there is still time and players to change this.
