Game Wrap 8/31/2019: Padres 4 Giants 1

The Giants could not capitalize on a strong start by rookie Logan Webb as an exhausted bullpen collapsed both literally and figuratively.  Key Lines:

Austin Slater RF- 1 for 4, HR(5).  BA= .281.  Slater homered in the first inning to give the Giants their only run and a lead that held up into the 6'th inning.  Slater is in a mini-slump hitting just .143 over his last 7 games, 14 AB's.

Logan Webb RHP- 5.2 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 7 K's, GO/AO= 7/1.  ERA= 3.52.  One out short of a Quality Start with dominant peripherals.  Webb has a 16/4 K/BB in 3 MLB starts, 15.1 IP with a GB/FB of 17/7.

Reyes Moronta RHP- 0.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 2.86.  Moronta entered the game after Webb allowed a double and single with 2 outs in the 6'th.  On a 2-0 count to his first batter, Luis Urias, he threw a 98 MPH FB and immediately grabbed his right arm and fell to the ground in obvious pain.  He stayed down for several minutes and we then helped off the field with the trainer supporting his right arm.  After the game, Bruce Bochy said it was a shoulder strain and he will undergo an MRI today.

Tyler Rogers RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, GO/AO- 4/0.  ERA= 2.70.  More groundball goodness from the rookie Rogers.  Rogers ended up walking the batter he inherited from Reyes Moronta but Moronta was charged with the BB.  After that it as 4 consecutive GB outs.

Tony Watson and Will Smith gave up 1 and 2 runs respectively in the 8'th and 9'th innings as the Giants offense failed to add on after Slater's first inning bomb.  This is what happens when you rely on the bullpen to pick up a bunch of five and dive SP's for a full season then deplete it at the trade deadline.  Will Smith might have been a bit upset by his friend's earlier injury too.

The Giants remain 7 games out of the Wild Card race with 1 less game to make it up.

Jeff Samardzija and Tyler Beede flip their rotation spots with Shark pitching the 4-game series finale today against LHP Eric Lauer.

  1. The other odd issue is how poorly this team continues to play at Oracle. Their overall road record is 4 games above 500 while their home record is now 7 below 500! Coming off a 2 game road series sweep against the A's scoring 15 runs, they've gone 1 win and 4 losses at home scoring 10 runs in those losses. This is something that Zaidi needs to look at as well. While the Melancon deal made the pen weaker, still say it was the right move to make.

    1. Right. Farhan admitted that Pillar is one of the few who can hit HRs at Oracle. Even if he did not want to tie up maybe $7 M
at CF position hard to look elsewhere when Pillar proves he can hit 10 HRs a year out at Oracle.

I want to see if Shaw, Davis can hit MLB pitching. Shaw in particular has awesome raw power. If he can hit MLB pitching he can hit them out of Oracle.

  2. Yes, I'd like to see Shaw and Davis display their raw power, very important in how offensive baseball is played today. Maybe we'll see the bullpen mounds moved to the outfield as well shortening the dimensions too. Doc I get why some fans might question trading Melancon and Dyson depleting their pen and now Morontha is gone for awhile, but the pen was their strength and a prime area to deal from. Had Zaidi decided to stand pat at the deadline, that would have bothered me a lot more.
