Game Wrap 9/7/2019: Giants 1 Dodgers 0

A bloop single, a walk, a trapped liner and a groundout produced a run for the Giants in the first inning.  That was all Tyler Beede and a makeshift bullpen needed to secure a series win agains the Hated Ones.  Key Lines:

Mike Yastrzemski LF- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .270.  YtY led off the game with a bloop single and eventually scored the only run of the game.  Oh, and I guess I'm late to the party, but Pablo Sandoval reportedly had trouble pronouncing YtY's last name so started calling him "Glass of Whiskey" and it stuck.  There's a Glass of Whiskey T-shirt with YtY's image on it.  I think I'll stick with Yaz the Younger.

Tyler Beede RHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 5.33.  Beede had pretty good command of a very good 95 MPH fastball and it got him through 5 innings.  I couldn't believe it when Boch left him in to face Cody Bellinger with 2 outs, the bases loaded and a LHP warmed up in the bullpen in the 5'th inning.  Bochy's faith was rewarded with a pop-up to LF to end the inning.  I guess at this point in the season, the outcome of the game doesn't matter except to us Dodger Haters and Boch needed to try to instill some fortitude in the kid, which is very unselfish of Bochy since he isn't going to be around next season and is going for 2000 career wins.

Shaun Anderson RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 5.22.  I can see Shaun Anderson being a better RP than SP.  He was throwing 95 MPH heat which is 2-3 MPH harder than when he starts.

Tyler Rogers RHP- 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, GO/AO= 2/0.  ERA= 1.23.  Tyler Rogers is doing his thing at the MLB level with a GB/FB of 4.33 which is darn awesome in the launch angle/4-seam FB era.

Jandel Gustave RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K, Save(1).  ERA= 1.86.  Jandel Gustave has to be on the short list of favorites to be the Giants Closer next season.

Dereck Rodriguez goes for the sweeeeep today facing LHP Julio Urias.

  1. Good point on the unselfishness of Bochy to leave Beede in while going for 2000 wins. What a legend.

    1. Bochy has always puts his players, feelings and sensitivities, first and foremost, sometimes ahead of winning.
He would have even more difficulty next year dealing with probably more decline from the 3 legacies, something a new manager, if he is of the analytics mode, won't have so severely.
Zaidi could help by trading the only one without a "no trade" clause by picking one of the teams not listed next year and getting whatever he can -- whether that really helps the team is problematic.
That player could help in this by not listing the teams most likely to want him -- or not even making a list.
      Like that's going to happen!

    2. How many more does Boch need for 2000?

    3. I found my own answer: 5 more to go (from 19 games).
From the bottom part of this article:
      https://www.mlb.com/giants/news/giants-lose-bruce-bochy-s-final-dodger-stadium-game
And his losing record (107-108) at Dodger stadium still has him with the most wins (by a visiting manager obv.

  2. AZ takes a page from the Giants' July playbook and gets desert HOT: from 64-66 on August 24th, they've leaped into WC contention with 11 wins in 12 games, 1.5 games behind the Cubs.
They have 4 games in NY next week and later 3 @ home with the Cardinals, but otherwise play Cincinnati, Miami and San Diego, while Cubs major hurdle is 7 games with St Louis.

Funny thing, isn't it? -- D'backs trade Grienke at the deadline AND Goldschmidt earlier, lose Corbin and Pollock to Free Agency, but are 8 games over .500 -- a 6-game improvement over last year!

Will the Giants be better in 2020 after losing Bumgarner, Smith, Watson (possibly), Sandoval (FA), and the guys traded at the deadline?
