AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels edged out the Bowie Baysox 2-1:

Garrett Williams LHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.60.

Someone asked whether I was surprised by Joey Bart's success in AA:  1.  Almost nothing that happens in this small a sample size should be surprising.  2.  Joey Bart is a really good player who is still my #1 Giants prospect.  So no, I am not surprised.  I guess a more interesting question to me is if between this small sample and if he does well in another small sample in the Arizona Fall League, if he starts next year in AA or if he does the Buster Posey and goes straight to AAA for his second full pro season?  Corollary: What is the Giants ETA for Joey Bart and how are they going to finesse playing time for him and Buster Posey?

  1. Your question, How are the Giants going to finesse playing time for (Bart) and Buster Posey?
There are at least 3 IF's which makes any answer problematic:
    1. Bart gets to AAA and thrives, making it to SF while Posey is still "the" catcher.
    2. Buster hasn't declined to an non-playable WAR.
    3. Who is the manager -- organizational guy or completely from the outside?

My guess is, if all the if's are positive for Bart, he'll supplant Posey much as Posey did Molina except Giants have no out in terms of a trade as they did in 2010. Can anyone imagine DFAing Buster?

    1. Just move Buster to manager. Problem solved.

    2. This is a real problem to me. Personally, even if Posey is around a .700 WAR, I'd really like to see him finish out his career in SF because to me he is an icon and I'll forever love him for the 3 championships he lead us to. That is at least a few more years, he's only 32. Bat him 5th or 6th if you don't want to put him in the middle of the lineup anymore. Can you imagine Buster in another uniform? I'd love to see him finish his career a Giant.

That being said, you can't let Bart sit idly by at AAA for several years if he's ready. If it were up to me, I'd move Posey to 1st and release or trade Belt. Posey could even catch one or two days a week or be the backup to spell Bart. He'd be a great mentor too for Bart to learn from. Even if Posey doesn't want to be a mentor, just watching him would probably be good for Bart.
