Game Wrap 9/11/2019: Pirates 6 Giants 3

As they have done so often against rookie pitchers with high ERA's, the Giants offense struggled with just 1 hit in the first 4 innings.  When they did break through in the 5'th it was with an IF single, walk,  single, FC/Error, walk, walk.  Things were looking up with Brandon Belt and Steven Vogt coming up, but they both made outs and the Giants were no-hit the rest of the way.  Key Lines:

Logan Webb RHP- 4.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 5/2.  ERA= 6.75.  Webb made some really good looking pitches, but his command was wildly inconsistent and it cost him.  It looked like he was trying to do too much out there at times and needs to learn to stay within himself.

Kyle Barraclough RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 6.44.  Giants are obviously auditioning bullpen roles for next season.  How about this one?  Barraclough started the inning with a walk, bunt single, Sac/Error, walk.  Then he struck out the next 3 batters in a row.

Conner Menez LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 6.00.  The Giants need to find replacements for Will Smith and Tony Watson for next season.  Menez is making his case with a line of 2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K's over 3 bullpen appearances.

  1. Milwaukee loses Yelich for the season while winning 6 in a row, 9 of 11 and moving into a tie with Chicago for the 2nd WC.
AZ trades their blue chip then wins 11 of 12 to move into contention before dropping 4 in a row and spiraling back toward the all-but-eliminated Giants.
The Amazing Mets with a Real Rotation say don't forget us and make a serious presence among 5 teams contending for the same WC separated by 2.5 games. Interestingly, Stroman hasn't helped, but Shaun Anderson's teammate @ Florida just 3 years ago, Pete Alonso leads the world in HRs and threatens 50!
The AL, not without drama, has 3 teams including the A's within 1-game competing to play a game for the honor of facing either the Yankees or Astros -- 2 likely teams to win > 100 games.
There's a lot going on the next 2 weeks just not in San Francisco, although they do manage to win one-run games at a near 70% rate, 34 out of 49, for whatever that's worth...

"Giants announced a crowd of 26,627. They have 26,000 season ticket holders."
TV pictures of the stands showed a LOT of empty seats -- it didn't appear even half full -- was the announced number tickets sold, not crowd size?
In 3 games this week with the Pirates, attendance was:
    Monday 26,826
    Tuesday 26,877
    Wednesday 26,627
Is this lack of interest in the Pirates?
Or a comment on the Giants, 31-40 .437 at home?

This game was worse than the score: Giants went 3 up/ 3 down in 7 innings, 8 innings if you include the first: after a leadoff singe, 3 up/ 3 down.
Even the 5th inning rally after two runs scored: bases loaded, none outs, top of the lineup batting: a solitary walk among the next 4 hitters.
Opening lineup: 4 rookies and a DFA, Crawford (0-2, W), Belt (0-3), and 2 2019 acquisitions. Not real exciting. Substitutions were nearly all rookies and acquisitions.
It is September baseball and what the Giants can expect for attendance at least this week -- 4 more games with Pittsburgh and Miami, and 3 the last week with Colorado before finishing with LA -- does anyone want to see that?

"I used to be the Stubhub seat upgrade fan of the game on a regular basis. It's called moving down when the usher is distracted. Today is an ideal day to try it. There might be 7,000 actual fans in seats right now.'
    OMG...
