Game Wrap 8/4/2018: D'Backs 9 Giants 3

For the second game in a row, a young Giants SP gave up a 5-spot to the D'Backs in the first inning and the route was on.  Key lines:

Andrew McCutchen RF- 5 for 5, 2B, HR(12).  BA= .264.  Every time Andrew McCutchen has a good game, and he has had a few really good ones, I think "ok, here we go.  He's going to get hot!"  So far that hasn't happened as he's never really gotten traction on the season.  Maybe this game is the start of the long awaited hot streak?

Steven Duggar CF- 2 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .270.  Steven Duggar is actually hitting a bit better than I thought he would and a whole lot better than I was afraid he might.  He seems to be gaining confidence at the plate and is a plus in the field.  Have the Giants found their CF of the immediate and short term future?

Andrew Suarez LHP- 5 IP, 10 H, 8 R, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.60.  Young pitchers face a number of pitfalls as their career starts to extend.  Hitters get better scouting reports.  Fatigue from the grind of starting every 5'th game without being able to let their guard down for even one batter starts to set in. This was Suarez' 19'th MLB start.  His pitching lines started to slip noticeably 3 Starts ago and the wheels came off tonight.  He's now allowed 19 ER in 21.2 IP over his last 4 Starts.  He may need a breather, but the Giants appear to have run out of replacement options.

The Loss drops the Giants 6 games behind the NL West leading D'Backs.  The Dodgers are getting destroyed in Houston so they will likely end up 1 game behind he Snakes in 2'nd place.  The Rockies lost to the BrewCrew so are 3 games back in 3'rd place.

Derek Holland tries to salvage a split of the 4 game series tomorrow against Robbie Ray.

  1. might be time to trade mccutchen at this point, staying out of the cbt is a big offseason win!!

  2. Game within the game

Top of the lineup (1,2,3): 8-15
    Batters 4,5,6,7: 1-14
    RISP: 0-7 (AZ 3-6)
    2-out RBI: 0 (AZ 8!)
HRs, Runners on: 2,0 (AZ 3,2)

    Curiosities:
    Both clean-up batters 0-4
IF Suarez could have gotten the 3rd out (twice), he would have pitched a shutout! (If frogs had wings...)
Giants lose again when Hundley starts as C (13-25). Is Buster the indispensable giant?

What a great catch Duggar made in the tip of his glove while dodging Cutch!

  3. Casey Kelly (28 yo) has pitched 130 innings in Sacramento this year, 101 last year, 95 in 2016. He may be done before he gets called up!
Shaun Anderson (23 yo) is at 112 IP, 11 shy of his career high. He'll be topped out by September.
Chase Johnson (26 yo) jump from Richmond? He pitched some AAA last year, unlikely to give more than 5 IP (historically).
How 'bout Timmy? At least he would fill the stands at least once.

  4. Duggar: Statcast gave that a 31% catch probability. 112' of running. Also, I looked at his stat-cast fielding. He's only four hits at the following catch percentages -- 53% (4 star), 27% (5 star), 3% (5 star) and less than 1% (5 star). Everything else he's fielded was graded impossible. Over all, he makes 4% more catches than expected for balls hit in his zone.

That's better than anyone else on the Giants by a significant amount. McCutchen, btw, is -4%. To put that in baseball parlance...

If the flyballs going into the zone were at a .250 average, Duggar drops that to .210 and McCutchen raises it to .290. This is why I think McCutchen is such a terrible defender. He makes things significantly worse, not better, in the field.
