Hot Stove Update: Rays, D' Backs and Yanks in a 3-Way

The Rays continued their selloff of veteran players for prospects while the Yanks get Brandon Drury from the D'Backs.  He can play 3B well enough that the Yanks can take their time with Miguel Andujar and/or Greyber Torres.  The D'Backs get OF Steven Souza from the Rays.  Souza hit 30 HR's last year but a pretty good OBP, but a poor BA.  Souza is a much better defensive player than Yasmany Tomas and hit 30 dingers last year with a .351 OBP so this is probably an upgrade.  The Rays get prospects.  LHP Anthony Banda is the most well known but 2B Nick Solak has a lot of admirers and is a solid prospect.  Two more prospects will be going to the Rays as PTBNL's from the D'Backs.

So, the D'Backs appear to win this trade with the Yankees getting some immediate help while the Rays get a few nice prospects who may be part of a rebuild effort.

  1. This was a fascinating trade. I agree the Yankees made out with Drury since they need a 3rd baseman. I was thinking from a fantasy prospective that his stats might go up playing in that lineup and ballpark. The funny thing was my fantasy draft was this past weekend and I completed a trade this morning trading away Stanley Souza for Avisial Garcia. The real trade made me think twice, lol. Maybe the Dbacks did ok getting Souza at a lesser cost to make up for some of the power they lost out not signing JD Martinez. I'm happy that the Giants won't have to face him in the NL West.

    1. Tha Humidor is a wild card from a fantasy perspective. Souza's main offensive value is in the dingers. If the humidor significantly suppresses the dingers, there isn't much left.

  2. Handicapping the National League:
Dodgers, Cubs, Nationals likely to win their divisions again, none has lost its "favorite" status.

Cardinals, Brewers, D'backs, Giants, and probably the Rockies are making noise along with (some) movement toward contending.
If the Mets SPs show up they could be loud. Braves, Padres, & Phils are looking at next year.

After the "Big 3" there are at least four teams that want in and 2 will be disappointed. Or there are 6 in contention beyond the division winners, and 4 will be disappointed.

Although the Giants have been bold within their CBT hell, it will only be enough if the 30+ yo heavy roster stays healthy and gets a whole lot better than last year. +22 in wins likely won't be enough and that would represent a good turn around. Can they come up with 25?

Last time they improved by 22 or more wins was 1997 and they jumped to 1st and lost the LDS 3-zip.

The BIG, incredible jump was +31 to 100+ wins and no cigar in 1993 with a new left fielder and manager.

Not a great betting-line here, too much has to go right, but they all start tied for first.

Say they do +23 wins, 87-75 got Colorado into the wild card last year, and maybe they can make some noise with Bumgarner v Grienke -- at best it's a long shot, a very very long shot.

Afraid we'll be watching the playoffs on TV.
