DrB's 2018 Giants Top 50 Prospects: #18 CJ Hinojosa

CJ Hinojosa, IF.  DOB:  7/15/1994.  B-R, T-R.  5'10", 175 lbs.  Drafted 215 Round 11.

AA:  .265/.321/.340, 16 2B, 4 HR, 5 SB, 7.4 BB%, 10.1 K%, 417 PA.

I've followed CJ since he was an interesting HS draft prospect before embarking on a mostly disappointing college career at Texas.  He has a very similar profile to Ryan Howard. On the surface, Howard may look like the better prospect.  He's bigger, was drafted higher and had the great BA for San Jose.  I ranked CJ a notch higher because of success at the very challenging AA level as well as better BB and K rates.  CJ probably profiles as a future utility IF at the MLB level.

  1. I like him, and if he could develop some power, I think he could project to full-time 3B. Otherwise I think you're right about utility infielder.

  2. Who would you project to be the Sacramento SS in 2018?
Who would you project, at this time, to be Crawford's successor?
Is Kelby the backup SS for 2018?
Is this why d’Arnaud and Rutledge and the other Blanco are in camp?
Are the near-in choices Calixte and the above mentioned guys?
Longer term Hinojosa and Howard and ... ?
I guess Tomlinson is pretty safe just now!

    1. Whoa! Questions!

I'd like to see CJ move up and be the starting SS for Sacramento with Ryan Howard playing the position in Richmond. More likely it will be some guy on a minor league deal like Calixte or Wander Franco.

Crawford is under contract through 2021(yikes!) so I doubt his successor is currently in the organization. Current longshots would be Brandon Van Horn, Manuel Geraldo and Ghordy Santos. I'll go out on a limb here and say Crawford's successor is Nander De Sedas! How's that?

Kelby seems like the best back up SS for 2018 unless they can dig up someone better in a dumpster dive.

Dodgers have had a lot of success with deep depth. Giants are hoping they can catch lightning in a bottle with some of these minor league deals.

    2. Considering De Sedas Crawford's successor, IF the June draft were today, would you take De Sedas if Detroit doesn't take Beer or De Sedas with their first pick?

    3. Don't try to overthink it here, anon. it was just one possible scenario.

Whether Beer is still my #1 on draft day or not, I believe it is highly unlikely the Giants draft him if he is available at #2. He's a corner and has not performed well with wood bats. In the Brian Sabean era, I don't think the Giants have ever drafted a corner player in the first round and they are almost obsessed with wood bat performance.

De Sedas, on the other hand, fits the profile of the type of player the Giants like to draft and would make a perfect bookend to last year's Heliot Ramos as the Giants build their farm system for the 2020's.

    4. Fair enough!
What about putting a 1 and 2 AFTER your rankings to indicate, at this moment, how YOU would pick?

    5. DrB's Draft Board is MY ranking TODAY. It is not set in stone until draft day as I update it each time I add a name. It will likely be much different by draft day.
