"When the Giants Come to Town..." is my blog intended to chronicle my thoughts on San Francisco Giants baseball. My special interest is in prospects and the farm system, but of course, will comment on all aspects of the San Francisco Giants. I will also comment on baseball in general, particularly from a fantasy baseball perspective. I hope you will find the site informative, and invite you to join in the discussion.
Just seeing if you agree with my suggestion for the offseason: Melancon and Logan from the FA list and trade for Braun.
ReplyDeleteThat would be OK with me. I think that scenario would be dependent on the Luxury Tax cap rising, which means the CBA has to get done. Unfortunately, it's sounding like the two sides are not as close as they were making it out to be at the beginning of the postseason, so I'm thinking that even if they get a new CBA done and even if the Luxury Tax cap rises, it won't kick in until 2018.
DeleteDo you think given how Buster responded during the Melky suspension; he would welcome Braun to the Giants?
DeleteRichard in Winnipeg
Braun has baggage, that's for sure. I'm not sure Buster is the only person who might care about that. I will say there was a lot more to the Melky situation than just his suspension. He was not exactly upfront with his teammates about it. Of course, there's the matter of Braun throwing the courier under the bus too. But yeah, Braun's history is definitely a reason why the Giants might not want any part of him.
DeleteWould "Giants might not want any part of Braun's history" apply to Chapman also?
DeleteLooking at the 10 playoff teams closer statistics in the last month of the season, Giants finished last but the Dodgers weren't far behind.
Jansen is very good, a definite upgrade for SF, but he's barely elite and costs the draft pick.
Don't you think the Dodgers will go all out for Chapman and collect the compensation pick for Jansen?
Considering the Giants had a good enough team to win except their closers, why wouldn't Chapman be more important to them than to any other team?
If the Dodgers don't get Chapman, won't they either be a strong bidder for Melancon (and the draft pick for Jansen) or settle for Jansen?
I can't see them not outbidding the world for one of the three -- they lost the NLCS at least partially because of their BP.
Not to minimize the seriousness of domestic violence, but his offense seems to be a one time mistake that has been adjudicated by the legal system and by MLB. Any team signing him that cares about their image and doing the right thing would need to do their homework, but I don't see Chapman's situation as nearly the disqualifier that Braun's may be. Braun systematically cheated the game and then tried(temporarily successfully) to make the poor courier the bad guy instead of taking responsibility for his own actions.
DeleteAs for the baseball analysis, yes, Chapman would solve a lot of the Giants problems. He's going to be incredibly expensive and the Giants seem to be signaling that they do not think they can go that high. Personally, I think it will be Melancon or a trade.
I know a lot of Dodger fans and I think the Dodgers are going to have a big problem with their fanbase if they let Jansen go for anything less than getting the draft pick and signing Chapman. If I had to predict, I would say Jansen re-ups with the Dodgers, Chapman goes to the Yankees. Maaaybe Melancon to the Giants but there will be other bidders and Melancon is the highest risk of the big 3 closers to tank long before his contract is done. Right now, I'm leaning toward a trade for a closer as being the most likely scenario for the Giants.
Wouldn't there be a bidding war for a trade, too?
DeleteSince the Giants NEED a closer, I shudder to think of the cost!
Do you think anyone is off limits?
Aside from coveted prospects, would you consider including Mac Williamson or a valued IFer?
Would you trade Williamson for a 1-year rental of J D Martinez?
There is a bigger pool of trade possibilities: Wade Davis, David Robertson, K-Rod, possibly Alex Colome.
DeleteI do not see any untouchables in the Giants system, but Arroyo and Beede come close. It would have to be something special coming back to the Giants. Mac is tradeable, but I would not trade him straight up for JD Martinez.
DeleteI was looking at Yahoo Sports and I can't remember who it was attributed to but long and short of it is that both sides are doing pretty good and wouldn't want prolonged disruption of status quo as both sides are doing pretty good.Curious if your not a 'bonus baby' what is them minimum you can make on the farm and can you get a raise and still be in the minors?
DeleteI don't know the numbers but I think there is a standard minor league salary which is a bit higher at higher levels.
DeleteIt is true that both owners and players have it "made in the shade" and it would be stupid to sabotage all that with a lockout/strike, but it would not be the first time MLB shot itself in the foot with foolish intransigence.
Here is a blog with the salaries from a couple years ago:

I'm beating a very dead horse here looking to fill needs for 2017 (LFer and closer, if they don't get a FA), but how about Williamson (or Parker) and Stratton (or Crick -- LOL) for Martinez and Rodriguez, assuming Detroit is looking to the future?
DeleteThis keeps Slater, Duggar, Reynolds, Davis, and other promising OF prospects.
What would you give up to get those two in one trade?
l would probably make that trade. Love Mac, but I don't necessarily see the Giants being willing to put him out in LF for 600 PA's which is what he really needs right now. I'm not in love with either Martinez or K-Rod, so would probably only do it if nothing else was working out.
DeleteI still think Mac could have a breakout if you gave him the AB's, but it's a risk and I'm not sure the Giants are ready to take it.
What is a strength and weakness of the Giants minor league system? Are there any players from the system who can help the big club next year?
ReplyDeleteLG
Strength is OF. Weakness is pitching.
DeleteHelp in 2017: Ty Blach is the obvious name, but Chris Stratton too. Maybe Clayton Blackburn or Dan Slania. On the offensive side, I could see Arroyo and Austin Slater helping by midseason if needed, maybe even Chris Shaw or Steven Duggar.
