Game Wrap 8/31/2015: Dodgers 5 Giants 4

The Dodgers literally outlasted the Giants in a 14 inning marathon game decided when the Giants finally ran out of effective pitchers to take game 1 of this crucial 3 game series between the top 2 teams in the NL West.  Key Lines;

Matt Duffy- 2 for 6, BB, SB(8).  BA= .302.  Duffy has been an iron man for the Giants during this critical stretch and has stayed productive through it all.  Very gutsy player!

Brandon Belt- 2 for 7, 2B.  The middle of the Giants order went a combined 10 for 22, but came up a run short in the end.

Buster Posey- 4 for 7.  BA= .321.  Buster had 3 of his hits in the extra innings and was LOB all 3 times.

Marlon Byrd- 2 for 6, 2B.  BA= .242.  Byrd has been an RBI machine since coming over to the Giants.  He had 3 in this game, but again, none in the extra innings.

Jake Peavy- 5.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  Peavy took a 3-1 lead into the 6'th inning, then gave up a 2-run dinger to Adrian Gonzalez followed by a solo shot by Andre Ethier.  Wasn't Ethier supposed to be traded to someone else by now?

Bullpen- 7.1 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 6 BB, 5 K's.  The Bullpen pitched it's heart out as Romo went 1.2 scoreless innings followed by 2 each from Casilla and Kontos.  Bochy finally had to hand the ball to Mike Broadway, who has been strangely ineffective at the MLB level after dominating AAA.  Broadway failed to record an out while loading the bases.  Bochy went to Yusmeiro Petit who gave up the game winner.  If Petit was available to pitch at all, I think I might have had him start the 14'th, but I know he had pitched 3 innings on Saturday.

The Loss dropped the Giants to 4.5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West.  They remain 5.5 games behind the Cubs in the race for the final Wild Card playoff spot.

Madison Bumgarner faces Zack Greinke tonight in what is the closest thing to a must-win game so far this season.

  2. Okay, I get the double switch strategy, but how is it more strategically advantageous when you remove a guy who is hitting .333 in his last 7 games, .326 in his last 15, and .328 in his last 30, and already has a base hit on the night, and put in a guy who's hitting .091, .094, and .174 respectively, and who ends up going 0-4 (I realize Bochy couldn't predict that with 100% accuracy, but he dang sure could have been in the upper part of 90%. Probably something close to 99% sure it was going to happen.)? And the defense excuse is over. Tomlinson still has ZERO recorded errors, and has shored up his D to a point it's not just respectable, it's dependable. JP dependable? No. But every much as reliable as EA's at 2B.

    It seems to me the more advantageous switch would have been for Aioki in LF. It's getting to be more and more of an adventure every time a ball is hit in the air to him. I realize the switch would have come sooner or later with the game having gone 14 innings, but why not leave KT in there to get a few more swing (#RespectTheSpecs)?

    I really thought we had a chance to sweep this series with Peavey, Bum, and Leake throwing for us. I still think we have a legitimate shot at the next two. Here's to hoping it happens.
