Game Wrap 9/10/2013: Rockies 9 Giants 8

Hunter Pence and the Giants offense built a 6-0 lead that the pitchers could not hold and they ended up losing a hit fest.  Key Lines:

Angel Pagan- 2 for 4, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .278.  Pagan is on fire since returning from the DL.  Keeping him healthy seems to be a big key for next year.

Marco Scutaro- 3 for 6.  BA= .297.  Scooter and his magical bat keep cranking out the hits.

Hunter Pence- 4 for 5, 2B, HR(20).  BA= .289.  The Rev's 3 run dinger off the LF foul pole built a 3 run lead in the first  He kept adding on for a total of 6 RBI's.  He now officially has a 20/20 season.  His offseason value keeps climbing.

Ryan Vogelsong- 5 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 0 K's.  ERA= 5.82.  There were a lot of hard-hit balls in the first 4 innings but Vogey continues a disturbing trend of falling apart all at once.  Even his top velocity is down about 4 MPH to around 88, but when the roof caves in, it drops precipitously even further into the mid 80's.  Strange.  Starting to wonder if the Giants should/will pick up his option this offseason.

George Kontos- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.65.  Kontos seems to be relying less on his slider and has found a second wind here in Sept.

Giants are now in 9'th place in the race for the #1 overall draft pick in 2014.

Yusmeiro Petit faces Juan Nicasio in the afternoon finale to the series.

  1. We can't not rest (i.e. we can't not play) Pence. He's playing for his next contract.

Without discriminatig, we can't not rest Zito. He's fighting a contract too.

    5th here we come.

  2. Sorry, it should 'we can not rest' both times.

  3. Thanks for keeping us informed out in the hinterlands. In CO today - hope to catch the Gmen on KOA out of Denver.

Prayers to the 9-11 families & a salute to the fallen first responders and the troops who avenged them.

  4. Does anyone have insight into how the team currently views Kieschnick? He hasn't had a start since 8/28 and seems to be only getting sporadic pinch hitting appearances.

    1. kruk and Kuip were commenting on Roger K last night. They were pretty emphatic that looking for a LF who will hit the ball out of the park is going to be a top priority this offseason. They all but said that Bochy is frustrated by Roger's cautiousness in letting it rip.

    2. Again, Bochy is knowledgable with his idiosyncracies. Another expert might do it differently. So, not agree with Bochy is not to say he doesn't know his stuff.

Here, we have DrB impressed by (or agreeing with, I can't put words in his mouth, and so please correct me) Roger's cautious approach to maintain a decent average before thinking power while Bochy is already frustrated by his cautiousness in letting it rip.

    3. Typo - should be 'not agreeing with...'

    4. Let's just say that in Bruce Bochy's world, you better hit the ground in full stride or you ain't gonna be around long. Given his proclivities, it is quite remarkable how patient he has been with Belt and Crawford. Crawford probably stuck around for his D. With Belt, I think even Boch could see the potential was great enough to make it worth being patient.

    5. I would also say there are natural limits to the cautious approach, because as soon as the pitchers catch on that you are not going to take them deep, they start pounding you with pitches that are harder to hit on the ground or for line drives.

  5. Personally, I'm not one bit impressed with Kieschnick and his approach..Don't think he has the ability to hit for power AND average in MLB, and may not be able to do either...And Perez and Peguerro strike me as nothing but 5th OFs...I'm betting the Giants feel the same..Would have liked to have seen HERERA ......It would be great to be seeing rooks playing and taking some rips, but the Giants just don't have the OF contenders (or even 1B and moving Belt to the OF for now) for it...PENCE is a must re-sign..to go along with PAGAN and another big OF bat.

  6. I'm starting to think that Vogey is done too. He was bad before he got hurt this year. He's been bad lately. I think you have to a qualifying offer to Timmy, keep MB and MC, pick up one FA starter and let there be a battle for the 5th spot.

In SJ a few years ago, Roger K was a power hitter. Now, he's a slappy bag. We need pop out of LF.

    1. Roger K showed some power this year in Fresno. I think he's just trying to get his feet on the ground in the majors. Can't take that approach for too long, though, for the reasons discussed above.
