Down on the Farm: 9/8/2013

High A  San Jose Giants evened their semifinal playoff series against the Visalia Rawhide with a 2-0 shutout victory:

Matt Duffy(SS)- 2 for 3, BB.
Ricky Oropesa(1B)- 1 for 4, HR.
Elliott Blair(CF)- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.
Kyle Crick(RHP)- 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 8 K's, GO/AO- 9/1, 90 pitches, 65 strikes.

It was the Cricky and Ricky show today.  Oh man!  It doesn't get a lot better than having the top prospect in your organization dominate like Crick did in a must-win playoff game.  Love it, love it, love it!! Oh, and Matt Duffy!

  1. Picture this rotation:

    Bumgarner
    Crick
    Wheeler
    Cain
    Petit/Kickham/Surkamp/Vogelsong/Gaudin

    Wait, wrong dream.

    Picture this:

    Madison
    Cain
    Crick
    Vogelsong
    Petit/Kickham/Surkamp

    It can still be good.

    1. Crick is probably still at least a year and a half away. By 2016, I would say the rotation will be:

      Bummy
      Cain
      Crick
      Blackburn/Mejia/Stratton/Agosta/Flores
      Petit, Kickham, Surkamp/Escobar

Don't forget the 2014 first round draft pick which could yield a fast moving college ace or a fast moving HS stud who might not be ready until 2017 or 2018.

      My projected 2014 rotation:

      Bumgarner,
      Cain
      Timmy(he accepts a Qualifying Offer)
      Vogie(option picked up)
      Petit/Surkamp/Kickham/Escobar.

That is a nice, solid rotation with plenty of backup.

    2. I think that last one has a chance to be solid.

Cain can show us that this year is a fluke in the middle of his prime years.

Timmy has not been his youthful self for nearly 2 years now. I haven't given up hopes that he can evolve as a pitcher.

Vogie also can show us he should not be under-estimated.

Let's just say, at this time, and it can change when we see something different, in say spring training, that that rotation, on the whole, doesn't terrorize opposing hitters. It's a solid one, or can be a solid one.

    3. My projected rotation:

      MadBum
      Cainer
      Freak
      Petit
      Surkamp/Escobar.

Not so sure about Vogie. Of course, that is based upon Petit being solid the way out and Vogie not. I could see them picking up Vogie's option if he gives them something to chew on, and then Freak v. Vogie is the 3rd guy, with the "loser" long in the pen.

Tend to think Kickham is a left reliever (we are going to need to figure that side of the pen out).

    4. The Giants are going to be in a tricky position as far as rotation building for the next two years...First off, the Giants more than likely have 3-4 arms that will be ready to start in 2016, but maybe only one (ESCOBAR)in 2015 so they don't want any long contracts

My guess for a 2014 rotation is the following:

      Cain
      Bumgarner
      Lincecum (a 2 year contract)
      Vet FA (2 year contract)
      Vogie/Petit/Surkamp/Gaudin

I honestly don't think the Giants want to trust Surkamp or Petit and are not sure of Vogie (but will sign him) or even Lince (but will sign him also), and thus a vet FA (ala ARROYO) will be signed...All bases will be covered....They do not want a repeat of this year's pitching.

      In 2015 ----

      Cain
      Madbum
      Lince
      Vet FA
      ESCOBAR

      In 2016.....

      Cain
      Madbum
      Escobar
      Crick
      Blackburn....

or Lince has settled in and the Giants trade premium arm (Blackburn, Agosta, Stratton, Meija) for a premium bat

    5. Historically the Giants have not let the possibility of future logjams get in the way of signing who they need for the present and they have been mostly right in that stance. I could see them being completely fed up with the mess the rotation was in this year and look for a big shakeup which would require letting Timmy, Zito and Vogie all go and signing a couple of FA's, possibly to long term contracts. The way they are talking, though, it sounds more likely they they will try to get Timmy back for 1-2 years, pick up Vogey's contract and then find a 5'th starter out of Petit, Surkamp, et al. They pretty much always bring in 1-2 guys on minor league deals to spring training who can try to win a job or else pitch for Fresno hoping for an opening.

    6. Wouldn't shock me to see them jump into the Asian and/or Cuban market this offseason, but I would see that more as Larry Baer dictating that rather than Sabes, which might not be a good thing.

    7. Oh, and I am very excited about getting a top draft pick. I'm crossing my fingers that they don't drop out of the top 10 then lose the pick in order to sign a FA.

    8. Arroyo, Choo and Ellsburry are really the only QO-FAs that the Giants might go after, and I rank all of them as LONG shots at best (Ellsburry will be WAY too expensive, and not worth it, and I do not agree with the Giants paying top dollar for a pitcher -- they don't need to).

I agree, though, that IF they end up with the #12 pick (Toronto is guaranteed the #11), than I do not want them going after any QO-FAs.

  2. Hey DrB, are you going to any San Jose games during these playoffs?

    1. if they make the finals I might, unless it's Lancaster. That might be too far a drive. Might be worth the drive on a weekend if Crick is pitching, though.

    2. Definitely.
