Down on the Farm 4/6/2013

AAA  Tacoma Rainiers outhit the Fresno Grizzlies 8-6:

Kensuke Tanaka(2B)- 3 for 5.  BA= .308.
Roger Kieschnick(LF)- 4 for 5, 2B, HR(1).  BA= .308.
Carter Jurica(SS)- 2 for 4.  BA= .364.
Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 0.00.

Lots of roadblocks between Tanaka and 2B gig with the Giants.  Might be midseason trade bait?  Roger K tearing it up in the early going.  Surprised to see Jurica playing SS.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels topped the New Britain Rock Cats 7-5:

Ryan Lollis(CF)- 2 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .273.
Ricky Oropesa(1B)- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .111.
Adam Duvall(3B)- 1 for 2, HR(1), 2 BB.  BA= .375.
Javier Herrera(LF)- 2 for 3, HR(2), BB, 2 SB(2). BA= .429.

Herrera and Duvall are off to hot starts.  The EL has been a bit rough on Panik and Ricky in the early going.

High A  San Jose Giants beat the Visalia Rawhide 6-2:

Kelby Tomlinson(SS)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .250.
Ryan Cavan(3B)- 2 for 3, HR(1).  BA= .417.
Devin Harris(DH)- 1 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .250.
Kyle Crick(RHP)- 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Jorge Bucardo(RHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 6.00.
Jeff Soptic(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.  ERA= 4.50.

Cavan is stepping down to learn a new position.  Crick showed some command issues.  I hope our scout was there taking notes.  Also interested in hearing about Soptic.  He is supposed to be a a hard thrower too.

Low A

Game 1  Augusta Greenjackets stung the Lexington Legends 4-1:

Matthew Duffy(SS)- 2 for 3.  BA= .500.
Mitch Delfino(DH)- 1 for 2, 2B, BB.  BA= .333.
Shayne Houck(3B)- 2 for 3.  BA= .667.
Chris Stratton(RHP)- 5 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 6/2.  ERA= 1.80.

Stratton had an effective start.

Game 2  Greenjackets repeated the score of Game 1 over the Legends 4-1:

Jesus Galindo(CF)- 1 for 3, SB(1).  BA= .364.
Benjamin Turner(C)- 2 for 3, 2B.  BA= .667.
Shayne Houck(1B)- 1 for 3.  BA= .500.
Joan Gregorio(RHP)- 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 1.80.
Mason McVay(LHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 0.00.
Stephen Johnson(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.

Nice game for Gregorio.  Shankbone's favorite sleeper is off to a good start.

  1. Surprised to see Juan Perez playing 3rd base for Fresno. Looks like Roger K, Pegs, and G Brown are competing for a callup if the Giants need an OF, or maybe mid season trade bait. Interested to see how Osich does at high A, since I've read he could move up quickly if healthy. I'd like to see Martin Agosta do well and move quickly since I saw him pitch last year for St Marys and he's also a lifelong Giants fan.

  2. Good start for Stratton. Didn't have his best stuff. This David Lee guy is a good baseball writer, local beat for Augusta. Here's the pertinent quote: "Stratton's fastball had good life in the high-80s/low-90s, but he had trouble hitting spots, leaving several up and over the plate. After having the pitch get knocked around some, he turned to his secondaries to get him through the outing. His slider was sharp, while he relied less on the curveball and changeup."

Sounds like more mechanical tweak than injury, as a guess. Good. I like to see pitchers get through without their best stuff. Shows some mental strength.

Not sure if you're joking about my not liking the tall guys with Gregorio or making an exception with McVay. Maybe I need to start liking the man called Joan! Looks like Mizenko got the first save, that pen is just stacked. STACKED DrB! This whining about drafting pitchers, it just has to stop. (A little fun at my own expense)

I like that Shayne Houck character. .500 BA is totally sustainable!

    1. Oops, I meant to say with concerns about Stratton's velocity, it looks like more mechanical tweak than an injury if he's getting into the 90s. Good stuff.

  5. Report from Visalia

Your intrepid reporter did not make it to Saturday's game, as I was in San Francisco watching Vogey get hit around. I did attend Friday's game in Visalia and here is a short report: Escobar looked very good in his 5 innings. He had good command of both fastball and offspeed. He appeared to throw a bit faster than Blackburn. I confirmed with one of the players with the radar gun that Blackburn was throwing his FB between 88-91 MPH. Escobar got Cody Ross with a called 3rd strike on a FB. It must be a thrill to strike out a major leaguer like that. A pitcher on the Rawhide to be on the look out for is their starter in Friday's game - Archie Bradley. His was a first round pick in 2011 our of Broken Arrow High School in Oklahoma and is the Diamondbacks #1 pitching prospect. His fastball was between 95-98! Bradley will turn 21 in August. He had some command issues but when the pressure was on he simply threw it by the Giants. The Giants only threat came with the bases loaded, 2 outs and Angel V at the plate. Bradley got to a 3-0 count and then threw 3 fastballs past Angel, who took the first one and swung and missed at the next two. APGiantsfan

    1. Thanks for the report. Yeah, Bradley seems like the real deal. If he stays healthy he should be a good one for the D'Backs in a couple of years, unless they decide he isn't scrappy enough or doesn't play the game right, or something.
