Down on the Farm: 4/22/2013

AAA  Tucson Padres outslugged the Fresno Grizzlies 8-6:

Kensuke Tanaka(2B)- 2 for 5, SB(3).  BA= .333.
Cole Gillespie(LF)- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .259.
Roger Kieschnick(RF)- 2 for 4, 3B, HR(4).  BA= .368.
Johnny Monell(C)- 1 for 4, HR(3).  BA= .297.
Mike Kickham(LHP)- 5 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 7.13
Jake Dunning(RHP)- 2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.13.
Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.25.

At this point, I would say Roger K is the clear callup if an OF is needed on the big club irrespective of which side of the plate he bats.  Kickham is learning from the PCL school of hard knocks for pitchers.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels pounded the Altoona Curve 10-6:

Ehire Adrianza(SS)- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .267.
Joe Panik(2B)- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .280.
Andrew Susac(C)- 1 for 2, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .245.
Travious Relaford(PH)- 1 for 1. BA= 1.000.
Phil McCormick(LHP)- 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.87.

Adrianza continues his surprising hitting prowess.  Panik has his second multi-hit game in a row.  Well, well, well!  Look who shows up as a pinch-hitter in AA!  Shankbone is going to be bursting his buttons!  Not sure what this is all about but it's inneresting.

High A  San Jose Giants had the night off.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets had the night off.

  1. What is Relaford doing at Richmond? Duvall hurt still, and now Skyler Stromsmoe as well. So he gets a quick bump. Bobby Evans complained to BA about roster sizes for this exact scenario actually, having to juggle guys around. I've seen some noise about wanting more clubs, another low-A for example, from Fla-Giant I think. I'm not sure I agree with that. You have DSL, AZ Rookie, S/K Short Season Low-A for yoots, IFAs and new draftees. Then you have your 4 full season clubs. That's 7 affiliates, you figure 25 guys that's 175 to look after, plus the taxi squad shenanigans, so its really more like 210-220. If you can't find your talent in that group, I don't think another org will really put you over the top. Plus the expense of paying for all of that, coaching what not.

Gotta say Adrianza's stat sheet is looking good so far, good for him. .389 OBP right now. I don't know how you restrained yourself from mentioning Ricky O's 2 run single capping the Squirrels win!

Good to see Kieschnick back from injury resuming his work from last year. A better version of Nate the Great? Nate is up there in stats right now, but if I know our boy he'll either get injured or cold pretty quick now.

  2. Doc - Klima has up footage of Marco Gonzo... and there it is: the Noah Lowry comp! Klima read this blog? Cuz that one has been thrown down months ago!

    1. I saw that. I had forgotten I comped him to Noah Lowry, but I do remember doing that with one of the draft prospects. Yeah, a Noah Lowry who stays healthy from a late first round pick is a pretty nice return.
