Game Wrap 9/23/2012: Padres 6 Giants 4

If you were a player in the Giants lineup today, you should probably be at least a little concerned about having a spot on the playoff active roster.  Despite the all-scrubs lineup, the game ended up fairly close as the Giants starters  and members of The Committee took a day off after celebrating their NL West title last night.  Key Lines:

Xavier Nady- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .191.  Nady is hitting .308 over his last 10 games.  The Giants will need his RH bat in the playoffs.  He'll be on the roster, barring injury.  He may be auditioning for a roster spot next season too.

Francisco Peguero- 2 for 3, 2 SB(3).  BA= .167.  Peguero's job here is to try to impress the Manager and GM for future reference.

Yusmeiro Petit- 4.2 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 1 K.   ERA= 3.86.  I thought Petit did a commendable job seeing as how he had not pitched in a game in over 3 weeks.

Jose Mijares- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.65.  Even though he appeared today, gotta think Mijares will be on the playoff roster.  I think he will play a big role at some point.

Clay Hensley= 0.1  IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 4.72.  Hensley seems to have completely lost it.  I don't see any way he's going to be on the playoff roster.  Probably not on the roster next season either.

Brad Penny- 1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 5.88.  Penny really seems done.  I'm sure someone, somewhere will give him a chance next spring, but he's got to get his shoulder healthy and/or find another pitch or something.

Jean Machi- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 3.86.  Machi might be earning a look for a back of the bullpen slot next spring.

The Giants are the NL West Champions so who cares what the Dodgers did?  Have to say, I would just as soon the Dodgers not make it into the Wild Card game.  Dodgers won, but so did the Cards.  Dodgers trail Cards for 2'nd WC berth by 3 games with 9 to play.  BrewCrew is a half game ahead of the Dodgers.

Giants have the day off tomorrow before starting their final regular season homestand against the D'Backs.  Tim Lincecum will start that one facing Tyler Skaggs.

Giants have made it fairly clear that while they expect the starters to play and play hard so as not to get rusty, overtaking Cincy and the Nats for homefield advantage is not a priority.  They did not have homefield advantage against Philly in 2010  and did just fine.

  2. Hensley was great for us until his injury, so I would not go as far as saying he is gone. But his chances of making the playoff roster went down greatly once it was announced that all the starting rotation was on the playoff roster, as I ran down the possibilities and really most spots are pretty obvious a few days ago, with the last spot between Vogie and Hensley, but now it is pretty clear it is Vogie.

  3. While we're on the subject, which players do you predict make up the 25 man playoff roster?

    1. Position Players(13): Posey, Belt, Scooter, Sandoval, Crawford, Pence, Pagan, Blanco, Nady, Hector, Arias, Huff, Theriot.

Pitchers(12): Cain, Bumgarner, Timmy, Zito, Vogey, Romo, Casilla, Lopez, Affeldt, Mota, Mijares, Kontos.

They might go with 11 pitchers, drop Kontos and add Whiteside, so they have more flexibility using Hector as a PH or starting both Posey and Hector.

    2. I totally agree on the 25 roster, DrB. I just don't see Kontos being dropped for Whiteside, I think Bochy will just roll the dice and see what happens, with Pablo as the backup catcher should Posey needs replacement and Sanchez is gone. Much like he did in that game where we had only one reliever in the bullpen if the game went into extra innings.

Though, what are the rules on player injury in the playoffs? Are we SOL or can be add another player to the roster afterward?
