Down on the Farm: 9/3/2012

Last day of the regular season for the farm teams.  I don't think any of them made the playoffs except SJ although I really don't pay any attention to minor league standings.

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies defeated the Tacoma Rainiers 6-4:

Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(15).  ERA= 4.74.

AA  Akron Aeros blanked the Richmond Flying Squirrels 6-0:

Chris Heston(RHP)- 5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.24.
Mike Kickham(LHP)- 2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.05.

Squirrels managed just 3 hits.  Not sure why Kickham pitched in relief.  Pitching starters in relief on the last day of the season doesn't seem to be the way to send them into the offseason on a positive note.

High A  San Jose Giants topped the Modesto Nuts 5-3:

Joe Panik- 1 for 4.  BA= .297.
Carter Jurica(DH)- 2 for 2, HR(6).  BA= .300.
Adam Duvall(3B)- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(30).  BA= .258.
Alex Burg(RF)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .252.
Justin Schumer(RHP)- 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.87.

Carter Jurica hits .300 for the season.  Joe Panik falls short.  When was the last time any Giants farmhand hit 30 HR's in a season?

Low A  Charleston River Dogs beat the Augusta Greenjackets 7-1:

Nothing to see here.

  1. Has Heath Hembree's stock dropped a little bit? I thought coming out of Spring Training that we would see him make his debut with the big club sometime during 2012.. The Giants could use another RH reliever besides Casilla who throws 95MPH in 2013 with the Beard injured..

Nice to see Joe Panik finish strong in San Jose.

    1. I would say Hembree's stock definitely dropped. He had some arm issues which is never a good thing. His velocity was reportedly down. His K's were down by quite a bit. He reportedly is not making much progress with secondary pitches, not surprising since he's been used almost exclusively in 1 inning stints. He seemed better after coming off the DL, but still not exactly dominant. So yeah, I'd don't think I'll be ranking him as high in next year's top prospect list.

  2. hembree had some arm issues this summer, his stock is fine

i believe that this the first season since 05 that sj is the only team to go to the post...not sure that means anything

gl to sj and a great year to everyone else

    2. I agree about Hembree and his stock..Just fine...Not a bad thing to fight through some struggles be it injury or mechanics (or both)...And I think with his last 6 scoreless outings Hembree has shown that maybe he has overcome them..A very good way to go into next season or, if he goes there, the AFL...

hope these kids understand the rigors of minor league life...cuz stratton is gonna be there for at least 2 years

what is it with giants and blondes?

    4. I don't think minor league life is a problem as long as there is promise of better things in the future. Just my opinion and every situation is different, but there are two crisis points in a baseball marriage: 1. When it becomes apparent that the dream of a major league career is not going to happen. 2. When success, fame, adulation and money start flowing in.

I guess blondes just have more fun!

  3. They used Crick in relief the other day as well.

What are they doing? Are they trying to see if Kickham can pitch out of the San Francisco pen for the next 30 days or so?

    1. Thanks to a reader, we learned that Crick needed 2+ innings of work to qualify for the ERA title, but lost it due to the runs he gave up anyway. Maybe there was something like that with Kickham, but I don't know what it could be.

    2. Kickham was not close to the ERA lead - Heston, ironically is the leader, from what I can tell via BB-Ref - so I can't imagine what it could be unless BLSL is right that they are looking to try Kickham out in the MLB pen. The only thing that seemed to happen was that he crossed 150 IP threshold he's at 150.2 IP now. He is second in K's but too far away from 1st, though the two K's pushed him into second. But why him and not Heston, who was also tied with him in third? Though maybe Heston recently pitched.

  5. On your question about the last farmhand to hit 30, I can't say for sure, but the last I remember is Pedro Feliz, with 33 at Fresno back in 2000. If I recall, however, Fresno had a short left field wall in its original stadium. I hear that San Jose is a fairly big park all around. So good for Duvall!

    1. Scott McClain hit 31 HR in 2007 and got close with 29 HR in 2008. Todd Linden had 30 HR in 2005. Feliz had 33 in 2000, Damon Minor had 30 too. Mike Glendenning had 33 and Minor 31 in 1997. Not too many over the past 16 seasons. Lots of non-prospects among the bunch.

  6. Thanks for another great season of Giants prospect coverage DrB! Much appreciated, look forward to when (hopefully past October) you cover the farm system and give us your assessment and thoughts.
