Down on the Farm: Playoff Edition 9/5/2012

High A  San Jose Giants defeated the Modesto Nuts 3-1:

Shawn Payne(LF)- 1 for 3, HR.
Carter Jurica(DH)- 1 for 4, 2B.
Joe Panik(SS)- 2 for 4.
Alex Burg(RF)- 1 for 2, 2B, BB.
Clayton Blackburn(RHP)- 7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 9 K's, GO/AO- 7/2.
Josh Osich(LHP)- 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.
Jose Valdez(RHP)- 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K's.

The big news here is the dominance of Clayton Blackburn pitching his first game at the higher level and against one of the best teams in the league.  Wow!  Shawn Payne is showing why he should have been called up earlier in the year too.

  1. That's an impressive game from Blackburn.

Did MadBum or Cain pitch in a playoff game for San Jose at Blackburn's age?

    1. Matt Cain's Low A season was cut short by a stress reaction in his elbow. Bumgarner was not called up to pitch in a playoff game with San Jose. I think Bummy may have pitched more innings for Augusta than Blackburn.

  2. Anyone want to do the calculation for Panik's BA including regular season and playoffs? Let the march to 300 continue!

  3. That is some ballin' right there. Good for Blackburn. Now they have to go to Modesto for two. Or one hopefully.

Looks like Nady tweaked something. Long shot, but I wonder how bad Gary Brown is banged up. I cant see him being worse than Blanco right now, and maybe he has a little spark going.

  4. I recently heard someone on the radio discussing September callups and whether the minor league season needs to be adjusted to optimize development of players and the competitive balance of the game. It does seem that the September callups really change the bench length and types of games that are played this time of year at the MLB level.

I'm interested in what your thoughts are about the length and timing of the minor league baseball season-- is it just right?

    1. I think the minor league baseball season is just right. I think they should limit the September callups to 5 extra players to a 30 player active roster.

  5. Newman chatting on Fangraphs - here is his take on Blackburn - Excellent year for Clayton Blackburn of the Giants for sure. Be careful of two things though. While I didn't see him in person, I've been told his stuff was not on Crick's level and that there was a little of the advanced pitcher, command/control lefty profile in play. This could catch up to him at the upper levels.

Weak. Gonna throw a command/control "lefty" profile on a 19 year old who is hitting 92/93 with control with more in the tank? Weak.

    1. I don't really have an argument with Newman's take until he gets to the command/control lefty part.

I do wish Newman had made more of an effort to see Augusta in person as Crick, Blackburn and Mejia are competitive with any prospects in the SAL in terms of age vs level, physical tools and performance. Not sure what his issue is, but is just seemed like it wasn't so much that he couldn't see them as he didn't really want to.

I do think Crick has the higher ceiling and Blackburn the higher floor, but organizations need both types of prospects.
