Game Wrap 4/6/2025: Giants 5 Mariners 4

Camilo Doval blew the Save but Wilmer Flores singled to drive in the run for a walk-off win.  Key Lines:

Willy Adames SS- 1 for 4, R.  BA= .216.  Adames singled to start the 4-run rally in the 4'th inning and also made his first really eye-popping defensive play in the 5'th ranging to his left at full speed toward CF, turning and throwing almost without looking to nail a very speedy Julio Rodriguez at 1B.

Jung Hoo Lee CF- 2 for 4, R, 2B.  BA= .344.  Lee went the opposite way for both his hits.  The second, a single in the 4'th inning kept the line moving in the 4-run rally.  He is 5 for 8 with 3 doubles in his last two games.

Heliot Ramos DH- 1 for 4, R, RBI.  BA= .308.  Ramos also went the other way against a very tough pitcher to keep the line moving and drove in the Giants first run of the game.

Mike Yastrzemski RF- 1 for 3, HR(1), BB.  BA= .333.  YtY is off to a good start to the season.  After the game he said his daughter asked him to hit a home run so he promised her he would.  How great is that.  Oh, and 3-run home runs win games!  His blast gave the Giants a 2-run lead they kept until the 9'th inning.  Oh, and he started the 9'th inning rally with a walk.

9'th Inning- After Luis Matos LF grounded into a force out, Patrick Bailey C hit a long fly down the RF line that Victor Robles made a leaping catch on against the netting along the RF line.  Robles came up in severe pain while Matos tagged up and went all the way to 3B.  The Mariners appealed and it was ruled that Robles went out of play when he landed in the netting so Matos had to go back to second base.  Wilmer Flores pinch-hit for Christian Koss 2B and went the other way for a the walk-off hit.

Jordan Hicks RHP- 5.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 5 K's, 9/1 GO/AO.  ERA= 2.38.  The line doesn't look great but Hicks had to battle a ridiculously pinched and inconsistent strike zone.(Mariners SP Bryan Woo RHP had to deal with the same issues and wasn't any happier with the ump than Hicks).  To his credit, Hicks kept his cool and pitched through it.  His pitch count was starting to get a little long but he came out for the 6'th inning and went HBP, Line Out, GB single.  Randy Rodriguez RHP came in and gave up another GB single to drive in the third run Hicks was charged with.

Camilo Doval RHP- 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 1.80.  You had to anticipate torture when Doval came in for the Save Opp with a one run lead.  He didn't disappoint but at least managed to get out of the inning with the game tied giving the lineup a shot at a walk-off win.  In case you are wondering, Ryan Walker RHP was not available due to workload.

Tyler Rogers RHP and Erik Miller LHP pitched a scoreless inning each. Both pitchers are unscored upon in 6 games/6 innings for Rogers and 5 games/4 innings for Miller.

The Giants won their 7'th game in a row and upped their record to 8-1.  They are in first place in the NL West by percentage points.

Logan Webb RHP tries to keep it rolling in his third start tomorrow evening against the Reds and Hunter Greene RHP in a rematch of Opening Day.

  1. Doval just might not be built for the 9th. Kills me to say, with his stuff.

That catch Victor Robles made on the Bailey fly out in the 9th was nothing short of spectacular. Possibly the best defensive play made by a an opposing player at Oracle since Arenado's tarp dive.

  2. Strike zone was absolutely baffling by homeplate ump DJ Reyburn. So tight it seemed absurd to start the game, then a completely new version of Reyburn returns for (I think?) the 4th inning and started giving multiple inches off the right side of the plate and also above the zone. Hicks was flabbergasted to start and Lamont Wade ended with more emotion than I've ever seen from him. If there was ever a great anectdote to watch with your own eyes and come away with "Give us the robo-umps!" this was the one for us so far this season...

Despite it all, we win again! Go Giants!

  3. It looked like the Giants made good hitting adjustments in the 4th inning by not pulling the ball hitting against Bryan Woo who has a very good fastball starting with Adames single to CF, Lee single to LF, ending in Yaz 3 run homer to LF. It was fun to watch the exchange between Adames and Julio Rodiguez as they took turns throwing each other out on outstanding defensive plays this weekend. They're good buddies.. This is a great way to start the season , let's hope they continue their good play.

  4. I am of the opinion that it is time for the Giants to move on from Camilo Doval. I would hate to see his stuff go to another team, but his pitching acumen is terrible. He doesn't hold runners on base and he still hasn't adjusted to the pitching clock. His disregard for the runners on base is compounded by his slow delivery to the plate. Enough time has passed for Doval to correct these defincies that I think it is time to move on.

  5. Mike Krukow had a discussion about Logan Webb's first start against Cincinnati. Kruk said Webb invited 40 friends and family to game 1 and he was distracted by having to deal with hotel, restaurants, and sightseeing needs for the large group. Also, Webb was having trouble with the Cincinnati mound. Most parks have a flat infield but Great American's mound is the crown with tapering away from the mound to allow water drainage. Mound height is determined from height of infield grass so with the crown, its flatter than most mounds. I'm thinking the Reds use this mound to game the system to their advantage because pitchers not used to it may feel like they are pitching uphill or overstriding to compensate. Kontos and Dodgers have made comments about the mound in the past, also. Webb should do better at home with the regular mound, as he did in Houston.

    1. I think Webb himself mentioned the mound issue in Cincinnati.

  6. A key moment yesterday was the double play in the 8th inning but I haven't seen replays of it.

  7. Aren't there enough good ball/strike umpires to have 2 per crew and alternate them behind the plate?
D.J. Reyburn isn't the only bad umpire, and isn't rated the worst, but that game was a travesty — both ways.
The handwriting is on the wall: for better or for worst, robo umps are coming. If nothing else, they will be consistent.

  8. Schedule makers gave SF a chance for a good start with 9 games against non-contenders and 3 with a team eliminated in the Wild Card 2-0, all of whom have started the season below .500.
The Giants have more than taken advantage and have a reasonable chance of being 10-2 (or better) when they go on the road for 9 games: 3 each with the Yankees (6-3), the Phillies (7-2), and the Angels (6-3).
Would 5-4 be a good road trip?

    1. 5-4 would be a good road trip against almost any opponents.

    2. Starting the season with a 6 game road trip, no matter who against, is no easy task..and the Giants handled it well...5-4 road trip coming up would be great.

Best thing is they are building on the chemistry and identity formed in Spring training and pushing it forward..and having fun. What a difference from the FZ years

    3. The Giants almost always start their season with a six game road trip because the owners like having home games at the end of the season.

    4. Still makes it hard every season to come out of the gates fast..OTOH, maybe a better schedule at the end..Oh well, they all play 81-81. Hopefully they can handle Hunter Greene tonight.

  9. I'm eyeing the 17 day marathon starting with the Yankees on April 11, then I hope to be excited.

  10. Loving this team. It’s early but that plays both ways—gotta think WA and Fitz will improve, even some others cool off. What we know is we have a legit outfield with depth, a defensively minded IF with some decent firepower and a gold glove catcher. Dh and back ups to give relief. I think the rotation is solid and plenty to like from those not named Webb. RP is equally solid outside of Bivens and Doval.

Best part is minors have SP and RP to step in if someone really falters. It’s a long season but this is not a fluke nor a scheduling issue.

  11. Loving the team aslo..the way they play..the way they battle..the way they do the little things...But you can also see the talent emerging also in RAMSO and LEE (maybe MATOS too) to go with Adames (soon) and Chapman and others..

It really would be nice to have an extra LHRP for Melvin to have at his disposal late in games after he has burned MILLER (or visa versa).

  12. How would you work out your rotation if you were the "Hated Ones" manager?
You have 2 SPs who pitch once a week.
You have your "Ace" back on the IL.
Ohtani is ramping up to, ah, a September start?
Kershaw will be ready in, ah, 3 months.
When you have 7 position players with OPS+ from 245 to 136 and that doesn't include Hernández, Muncy, Pages, Taylor, and a b/u catcher, you call up a couple of AAAers to pitch for a team that has All Stars all over the field.
Still, in the tough NL West, they need to win 3½-4 games a week with 4 SPs. It's hard to do with 5.
Sad, huh? That's what you get for $390MM according to Fangraphs.

    1. I have resolved to not talk about the Dodgers if at all possible except in Game Wraps where they play the Giants head-to-head. The Dodgers are gonna do what they are gonna do.
