Down on the Farm: 4/8/2025

AAA:  Sacramento River Cats defeated the Tacoma Rainiers 6-1:

Grant McCray CF- 2 for 4, Sac, 2 SB(3).  BA= .282.
Jake Lamb 1B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .297.
Keaton Winn RHP- 4.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's, 6/1 GO/AO.  ERA= 4.05.
Trevor McDonald RHP- 4 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 5 K's, 6/0 GO/AO.  ERA= 4.00.

That's what the Giants want to see from Grant McCray at the top of the lineup.  Nice recovery appearances by Keaton Winn and Trevor McDonald.

AA:  Richmond Flying Squirrels outscored the Harrisburg Senators 7-4:

Jairo Pomares DH- 2 for 5, HR(1).  BA= .294.
Sabin Ceballos 3B- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .188.
Victor Bericoto 1B- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .143.
Adrian Sugastey C- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .364.
Vaun Brown RF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .333.
Seth Lonsway LHP- 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K's, 6/0 GO/AO.  ERA= 0.00.

Can a healthy season put Jairo Pomares back on the prospect radar?  Vaun Brown?

A+:  Eugene Emeralds were idle.

A:  San Jose Giants pummeled the Visalia Rawhide 11-1:

Carlos Gutierrez DH- 2 for 5, 3B, BB.  BA= .250.
Jakob Christian 1B- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(1).  BA= .235.
Walker Martin SS- 3 for 5, 3B.  BA= .231.
Drew Cavanaugh C- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .333.
Jose Ortiz RF- 1 for 2, BB, Sac, 2 Assists.  BA= .385.
Robert Hipwell 3B- 1 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .100.
Hunter Dryden RHP- 4 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Nice game for padding the old stat line.  Toonder off the bat of Jakob Christian.  Can Walker Martin break out this season?  Sharp looking pro debut from Hunter Dryden, Giants 17'th round draft pick in 2024.

  1. My fixation this season is team being in position to pay any price for Kyle Tucker -- 12 years $500MM? Not my preference, but maybe what it will take with likely NYY interest. Transitioning to fully home-grown pitching staff key to that and bunch of encouraging performances last night towards that: Roupp, Birdsong, Winn, McDonald, even Lonsway

    1. Vladimir Guerrero got $500M, Tucker is older but much fewer games.
Giants "broke" their bank on Adames: 7 yrs/$182M. Would they even double that and still not be near Guerrero? Apples and oranges?

    2. hi from OP here. except for being a few years older, Tucker is more attractive than Guerrero -- LHB, higher OPS, much more effective baserunner, good D at more important position (especially at Oracle) and higher WAR in the fewer games. Giants have lower '25 payroll that last season with $42MM in expiring contracts offset by $15MM rises next season for Webb &JHL. I hope they can get Tucker cheaper, but if they segue to entirely homegrown pitching staff & half of position players from w/in org early in careers at C, 1B, 2B & LF then I posit paying up to be set long term at RF (& SS & 3B) makes biz & baseball sense.

  2. No the giants shouldnt pay any price for Tucker and he’s absolutely not worth that much.

  3. Gotta love the pitching they are getting out of all the important youngsters in SAC, and there's a lot of them, as well as Lonsway and a few others..together with ROUPP and BIRDSONG...The current giant team will always be about pitching and D and hope to get some hitting....Eventually, Buster and GMZM will need to trade some of their pitching prospects in the higher levels for a bat(s).......and then there's ELDRIDGE, who shouldn't be rushed

  4. Grant McCray, 11 for 39 plus 5 walks, OBP .364, but it's a bit strange: all singles for a guy who has shown good power in the past.
With his speed, you'd think at least one of eleven singles might have become a double, or maybe he tried!

  5. very nice lines from two Sac pitchers. i'm being captain obvious to say i would love to see MLB level consistency from Winn and McDonald; otherwise they can't be trusted. thanks for providing Minor Lines. -e
