Down on the Farm: 4/9/2025

AAA:  Sacramento River Cats topped the Tacoma Rainiers 3-1:

Grant McCray CF- 1 for 3, SF.  BA= .286.
Logan Porter C- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .238.
Osleivis Basabe 2B- 1 for 3, HR(1).  BA= .212.
Carson Seymour RHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 4 K's, 3 HBP, 9/0 GO/AO.  ERA= 0.64.

Tristan Beck RHP(2.84), Sean Hjelle RHP(3.00), Joey Lucchesi LHP(4.15) and Justin Garza RHP(0.00) pitched 1 shutout inning each with Garza recording his second Save.   Seymour had a wild hair up his nose but his extreme ability to get groundouts minimized the damage.

AA:  Harrisburg Senators downed the Richmond Flying Squirrels 3-1:

Jairo Pomares LF- 1 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .286.
Sabin Ceballos 3B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .250.
Matt Higgins DH- 2 for 4.  BA= .286.
Joe Whitman LHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 1.80.
Will Bednar RHP- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 6.75.

5 K's in 1.2 IP is encouraging from Will Bednar who really needs to find some traction on his career this season.

A+:  Eugene Emeralds outlasted the Spokane Dust Devils 4-3(10 innings):

James Tibbs III- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .400.
Onil Perez C- 3 for 4.  BA= .364.
Cole Foster SS- 1 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .133.
Scott Bandura DH- 1 for 3, BB, SB(1).  BA= .444.
Cale Lansville RHP- 2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 4.50.

Tibbs continues his hot hitting.  Lansville threw 53 pitches in 2 innings for an early exit.  Ems used 6 pitchers after that.

A:  San Jose Giants pounded the Visalia Rawhide 11-3:

Carlos Gutierrez RF- 1 for 4, 2B, HBP, SB(2).  BA= .250.
Dakota Jordan CF- 3 for 4, 3B, HR(1), BB.  BA= .368.
Jakob Christian 1B- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(2), HBP.  BA= .286.
Drew Cavanaugh 1 for 4, HR(2), BB.  BA= .308.
Jose Ortiz DH- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .412.
Jose Ramos 2B- 1 for 3, BB, 2 SB(2).  BA= .333.
Niko Mazza RHP- 4 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Charlie McDaniel LHP- 4 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 K's, 5/0 GO/AO.  ERA= 4.50.
Nicolas Herold RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Lots of good stuff here.  A ball is a conservative placement for some of these college draftees from last year but it's still good to see them doing well, especially Dakota Jordan who has all the tools in the world but questions about the hit tool.  Ideally we want to see them up to A+ ball before the season is over.  Niko Mazza was drafted in round 8 last year.  Charlie McDaniel was an undrafted free agent last summer but did not appear in any games with a Giants affiliate.  Nicolas Herold was an undrafted free agent in 2023 and struck out 53 batters in 38.2 IP for the ACL Giants last season.

  1. It was encouraging to read a Baseballlamerica.com article titled top 10 MLB prospects who caught their eye in April. Sabin Cellballos was #8. The Giants praise his well rounded hitting approach and power to all field. Nice to see top draft pick Joe Whitman have a good start in AA.

  2. Wade Meckler has disappeared.
He was placed on the IL March 30, last playing on March 29, leaving with an injury.
He was 3 for 5 with a double and 2 walks, before going on the DL.
Meckler was activated from the IL on April 3 but has not appeared in any of the 6 games played since.
The River Cats have but 3 other outfielders: McCray (doing well), Bishop (fair), and Luciano (poor) — they have all played 11 games (River Cats are 6-5). Auerback has also filled in the outfield in a couple of games since Meckler was activated.
