Logan Webb and the Giants defense had one rough inning and the lineup seemed like they might be jet-lagged against former Giant Tyler Anderson LHP. Key Lines:
Jung Hoo Lee CF- 2 for 3, BB. BA= .361. Lee was the only member of the lineup who seemed to be awake. It also appeared the ball was not carrying well at the Big A, something the Angels broadcast team mentioned. Between jet lag, pitcher-friendly conditions and Tyler Anderson's timing disruption, it was not a good night for Giants hitters.
Logan Webb RHP- 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 12 K's. ERA= 2.40. Webb pitched spectacularly except for a stretch in the second inning that began after he struck out the first two batters. Nolan Schanuel doubled on a drive that was crushed to CF then Zach Neto, playing his first game of the season after a lengthy rehab, smoked one past Willy Adames SS that also went for a double. Adames has been eaten up by several of those so far. They are tough plays but I guess we are spoiled by watching Brandon Crawford routinely pick those during the prime of his career. Then to rub salt in the wound, Kyren Paris hit a grounder into no-man's land that Matt Chapman went a long way for and then bobbled and it somehow kept going out onto the OF grass scoring another run. Jo Adell followed with a line drive down the RF line on a late swing and barely beat the throw to 2B for a double. Fortunately that hit only put runners at 2'nd and third and Willy Adames handled the next play to finally end the inning. Logan Webb was visibly frustrated after at least two of those plays but in fairness to the fielders 3 of the hits were rockets and the error was on a ball that was in no-man's land. I remember in spring training Chapman and Adames had an agreement that anything hit to Adames right and in front of him was Chapman's ball. Gotta say in Brandon Crawford's prime he would have made the play and absolutely blown up anyone who got in his way, but he wasn't playing next to Chapman either.
The Giants record on the road trip evens at 4-4. Long road trips wear teams down and it feels like this one is no exception. It seems a little unreasonable that they had to play a late afternoon start time in Philly yesterday then play a game today on the west coast, but I guess that's why MLB players make the big bucks.
Tomorrow evening becomes a big game with Landon Roupp RHP facing long time Giants nemesis Kyle Hendricks RHP.(Hendricks has a career 2.33 ERA against the Giants vs 3.69 overall).
If the Giants.can end up with a 5 win 5 loss road trip, that would be good. Playing in 2 east coast cities and the last leg of trip ending in Southern California with no days off is a tough trip.
ReplyDeleteCrawford-Adames comparison: BA & OBP similar, Adames has more power and a lot less D.
ReplyDeleteIs Arteaga the best SS in the system? If he develops a bat could he push Adames to 2B?
Gotta start looking for first base help via the trade route at this point.
ReplyDeleteWhy so?
Deletewade is in the bingo cards, you could try lamb at first who i'd prefer over wisely, and i'm not yet sold on schmitt at first everyday. andrew vaughn would be a proven option at first as a rental.
DeleteNot sure what you mean by bingo cards but I've been saying all along LMWJ is hitting the ball hard. That is backed up by Statcast which has him with the second highest average exit velocity on the team behind......Casey Schmitt!
DeleteBingo cards normally batting below .100
DeleteLMWJ does not normally hit below .100 and based on his exit velocities won't continue to, so he's not a bingo card.
DeleteWish people would chill on Wade. Less than a week ago, people were calling for Fitz's head. He's now .310, .867 OPS, 149 OPS+. It's early, people. Geez.
DeleteIt's not great but it's (usually) not horrendously terrible when Umpires blow an occasional ball or strike, but when a 2-out, 3-2 pitch is more than a baseball width outside, it should never ever be called a strike, especially just when things might get interesting.
ReplyDeleteYesterday was bad.
i wanted melvin to go out and take an ejection last night
DeleteWhen will Bailey's inept offense catch up with him?
ReplyDeleteOTOH, in his last 7 games, the Giants are 5-2.
In the good-works-gets-rewarded category, Villar is UP to fill in for injured Schmitt (left oblique strain).
ReplyDeleteThe 40-man spot came from Encarnación's going to the 60-day IL.
