The Giants played another non-competitive game on multiple levels and leave our nation's capital getting swept by a non-competitive, rebuilding team. Just a few additional comments:
Once again the Giants do not get on the scoreboard until late in the game long after it was decided.
The Giants record in Opener games is is positive but their bulk innings guy, Anthony DeSclafani RHP made his 3'rd consecutive non-competitive appearance as he allowed 2 inherited runners to score in addition to giving up 4 ER of his own.
Oh, and if you are going to use an Opener, followed by a bulk-innings guy, it's probably not a great plan to bring in the bulk guy with runners on base in the first inning if the Opener forces you to go off script.
Jake Junis RHP had his second consecutive multi-inning scoreless appearance but both were in mop-up time. He now needs to prove he can do that in a leverage situation.
The Giants should be flying home tonight with a 5-5 split for the road trip which is actually pretty good but instead they have to stop off in Detroit for a makeup game tomorrow which I don't think any of us have high hopes for.
At this point I'm not sure it matters exactly where the Giants are in the standings so we'll give that analysis a rest for at least one game.
one of the most poorly managed games for kapler this year. a very poor decision to have disco come in for the final out of the first. disco still doesn't look right right and could benefit from another IL stint. one of winn or beck should be back up on the homestand. with what they are paying for manea, desclafani, and wood, there's a chance that andrew bailey could be fired after this season and bring in a fresh set of eyes to see if they can fix what's ailing them.
ReplyDeleteA great example of What If?
ReplyDeleteShould a Starter face 4 batters, the plan - get by 4?
What if?
Depend on DeSlafani? Over Alexander?
The Mantle of L-R is NOT absolute.
RIP Mike Ivie. Had a couple of good years as a Giant but never lived up to his potential in his career.
ReplyDeleteBilly Baseball
He's a forever Giant for no other reason than that PH grand slam HR to beat Don Sutton and the Dodgers in 1978. He also had by far the best season of his career as a Giant with 27 HR's in 1979. I read that an offseason hunting knife accident that nearly cut off a pinky finger effectively ended his career.
DeleteVery brief but fine Giant. Kid could hit! RIP
DeleteRe: Tiger Game: So who has the hottest bat on the team? Clearly Joc, so even though the Tigers are throwing a lefty to start, I would start Joc. Conforto is in the lineup and he is a lefty. With the way the Giants are struggling at the plate, it seems reasonable to go with the hot bat and not be married to the L/R paradigm.
ReplyDeleteConforto has significantly higher season and career splits against LHP's than Joc.
Delete....and you would not want to take out Flores as DH and put Joc in there. If Joc DH's you could move Flores to 1B and take LMWJ out of the lineup. Guess what? LMWJ has better splits against LHP's than either Joc or Conforto!
