Game Wrap 7/20/2023: Reds 5 Giants 1

Wilmer Flores 1B's solo HR in the 8'th inning, just the second hit of the game for the Giants, was way too little, too late to overcome a subpar start by Alex Cobb RHP as the Giants came out flatter than the pancakes they had for breakfast on getaway day from Cincinnati.

IDK what to make of Jake Junis RHP's 2.2 scoreless IP.  He's been so terrible lately it's going to take at least a couple more of these for me to trust him again in any kind of leverage situation.  But hey!  He might have bought himself those additional couple of appearances.

The loss dropped the Giants to 2 games behind the idle Dodgers in the NL West.  The D'Backs also lost so are also 2 games back.  The Giants and D'Backs remain 1.5 games ahead of the Phillies and Marlins in the Wild Card race while the Reds are a game behind the Phils and Fish.

Getting out of Cincy with a split of the 4-game series feels like a win although dropping the last 2 is disappointing.  The Giants move on to the Nation's Capital to take on the Nationals in a 3-game weekend series before a 1-game makeup game stop in Detroit on the way home.  Alex Wood LHP faces off against Jake Irvin RHP in game 1 tomorrow evening.

  1. Sup with all the youngins? They are looking completely overwhelmed at the place. Matos has no power, Bailey has horrible splits and is already regressing with more ABs, Schmidt can’t take a walk and is overwhelmed by major league pitchers, Wisely looks like an AAAA player, Villar has pop but can’t even hit .200, and Heliot Ramos will likely be playing for a different team if he ever has major league success.

    1. Major league baseball is hard as hell.

    2. This is a really common process: young player has a hot start, then the league learns their weak points and pitchers make adjustments. The key to big league success is if the young hitter can make the needed counter-adjustments. Some do and some don't.

    3. - I have been impressed with Matos. The at-bats have looked good -- not all balls have fallen in. Defense is good. Walk and strikeout rates are excellent for a rookie. Power will come with time and age.
      - Schmidt. Probably needs to be sent down. He needs to make a jump in his approach and he doesn't seem to be able to it at the major league levels.
      - The Giants need to trade for a major league shortstop or 2B (assuming Estrada comes back quickly) -- who can allow them to send Schmidt back down and keep Crawford in a part time role.
