Game postponed due to rain. IDK whether that robbed the Giants of a chance to finish the series on a high note or saved them from a humiliating sweep at the hands of one of the objectively worst teams in MLB.

ReplyDeleteMost huge long term contracts end badly.
DeleteUnder the WAR-value method, Bumgarner's extension paid big dividends to the Giants. The greatest of all long-term contracts was the Rays extending a young Logoria. With great defense and hitting, Longoria pulled in 40.7 fWAR for just $17.5 million over 6 years. FanGraphs computed that Longora produced $277 million worth of fWAR while playing under it.
ReplyDeleteBumgarner falls out of the Top-10 with just $62.5 million in fWAR over contract.
But, DrB is right in that most long-term contracts do not end well. They really need to be super-young players who have years of club-control and arbitration to go and are willing to settle for a good contract that settles/avoids all that.
Logan Webb RHP's extension is not nearly as team-friendly as Bumgarner's but it's not terrible. If he can produce a total of 10 WAR over 5 years he will earn his money. Not a slam dunk but also not unlikely.
Delete
