Game Wrap 4/20/2023: Mets 9 Giants 4

Sean Manaea got knocked out of the game as the Mets scored 5 runs in the 4'th inning.   The Giants got 4 runs back in a 5'th inning rally of their own but the Mets pulled away in the later innings against rookie Tristan Beck.  Key Lines:

Blake Sabol C- 1 for 4, HR(3).  BA= .190.  Sabol has struggled to get is BA to the Mendoza Line but he has undeniable pop in his bat.  He started the Giants comeback bid with his third HR over the CF wall in the 5'th inning.

Lamonte Wade Jr LF- 1 for 4, HR(2), BB.  BA= .205.  Wade drew another walk to lead off the game and has an OBP of .435.  He followed Sabol's blast with a solo shot of his own to L-CF for the Giants second run of the game.

Mike Yastrzemski RF- 3 for 4.  BA= .268.  YtY is off to a pretty good start to the season.  Michael Conforto DH played the whole game at DH and hopefully is close to playing in the field which would allow YtY to move back to CF.  If he can maintain a BA above .250 with some HR power and play CF, he will be an asset to the team.

Sean Manaea LHP- 3.2 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 3 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 6.60.  Manaea's velocity may be up but the results are not better than last season which was a disaster for him.  He looked great for 3 innings in this game only to have the wheels fall off in the 4'th inning.  BTW, you can add 2 HBP's to Manaea's pitching line.  Both of those happened in the 4'th inning.

Tristan Beck RHP- 5.1 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. Beck made some good looking pitches in his MLB debut but also got roughed up a bit in the 6'th and 7'th innings.  His job was to eat innings at all costs so stayed in to the end and put up goose eggs in the final two innings.

Anthony DeSclafani RHP tries to even the series tomorrow evening at 7:15 facing Joey Lucchesi LHP.

  1. Madison Bumgarner designated for assignment. This could become an interesting litmus test for FZ.

    1. How so? FZ was vindicated in his decision to not re-sign Bumgarner a long time ago. This turn of events is just the formal ending of something that ended a long time ago.

    2. MadBum might be able to sell out a couple games @ home...

    3. I just read a Dec 2019 article that mentioned the Giants made a 4 year offer at that time. Was it then a case that they wanted to or tried to re-sign and were outbid?

With Gausman and Rodin, if I recall correctly, they also tried to re-sign them, but were outbid. I could be wrong here with both of them, or one of them.

    4. Not absolutely sure about MadBum but I seem to recall the Giants did not make him an offer. Gausman openly said he never received an offer from the Giants and I am pretty sure Rodon was in the same boat.

    5. I'm guessing MadBum ends up in Texas, back with Boch.

    6. I am not so sure Bumgarner's heart is really in it anymore. I think he may just take his $37 M and literally ride off into the sunset.

    7. Here is the link, from Dec. 16, 2019, nbcsports ("why giants didn't keep Madison Bumgarner San Francisco forever") which mentioned the Giants circling back with a four year offer the week of the article, vs. the five year contract he eventually received from the D Backs.

    8. Baseball his harsh and the boys of summer fade. Reality is that signing him would be nostalgia bait because 2014 Madison Bumgarner is just part of history while 2023 Madison Bumgarner is a washed up pitcher who has been struggling for five years now. With the Diamondbacks he has ERA over 5 for the last 3+ seasons of work and even before he left the Giants, he was struggling on the road for years because he was pitching, on average, in neutral parks and did haven't Oracle to hide his issues.

For example, In 2018 his road ERA was 4.97, in 2019 it was 5.29. Too many games and IPs to claim 'sample size bias.' especially when the Diamondback's park is only a modest hitter's park, unlike the band-box in Cincinnati and some others, and his troubles have continued.

Since the bullpen remodel, Oracle is no longer a pitcher's park to help a flyball pitcher who is struggling to avoid bats and keep the ball in the park. It's now one of the most neutral parks in baseball. And there is no reason to believe after half-a-decade of poor performance he'll regain the magic of 2014.

    9. All very true. I am pretty sure if you go back in time to some of my posts re. Bum signing with the D'Backs I believe I mentioned the park factor and how his new crib was not going to do him any favors.

  2. 2nd guessing: when the Giants came back to make it a game at 5-4, maybe we'd seen enough of Tristan Beck for his very first ML appearance?

  3. Brandon Crawford: now with negative WAR (both b & f): is this the way he wants to go out?
Extended during his singular, career year in 2021, he is clearly having the worst year of his career.
Is he actually hurting the Giants this year or is he still the best option at SS?

    1. Probably still the best option but also clearly not the player he once was, especially on D.

    2. They did try to get a new SS this past off-season, but without success.

Crawford and Bumgarner - one they kept and the other they did not. Both are doing meh or so so at the moment.

Perhaps Bill Walsh's approach is the way to go here - trade them while they are still good which is not always popular with many fans who will still pay to see their aging heroes (the business side). I assume that was a consideration a 4 year offer was made to Madison.

  4. Hard to watch when an umpire's non-call turns a game around.
