"When the Giants Come to Town..." is my blog intended to chronicle my thoughts on San Francisco Giants baseball. My special interest is in prospects and the farm system, but of course, will comment on all aspects of the San Francisco Giants. I will also comment on baseball in general, particularly from a fantasy baseball perspective. I hope you will find the site informative, and invite you to join in the discussion.
I went to the game Sunday and instead of sporting the “FARHAN SUCKS!” sign we opted for something a little more positive and had a “VAMOS RAMOS” sign in the front row of the bleachers for his start in LF. Figured it gave us a better chance to get a ball from Heliot and less of a chance of getting kicked out. We were 25 feet away from Heliot every inning and he gave us zero love! Totally big leagued by a guy who was barely a big leaguer and couldn’t even tip a cap to a 12 year old kid holding a sign to support him. The game was also the lowest level of energy I have ever seen in that stadium and we left before the fireworks in the bottom of the 8th. A guy kept trying to get the “whats the matter with Reyes” chant going but only 2 people would answer him with “hes a bumb”. This team isn’t very fun to watch!
ReplyDeleteI am on the same page with you on Muncy, I saw a game earlier this year where he struck out 5 times? I figured it was time to put a fork in him. f there was a bright spot, it was Sean Hjelle recovering from his debacle inning to stay in and strike out the side in the heart of the order Betts, Freeman, and Smith. "Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"
ReplyDeleteWatching that blob of protoplasm(Muncy) go down into the dugout after those bombs was absolutely sickening. I finally turned the game off in the 7'th, way too late.
DeleteOh, and memo to Kap. The bunt has lost it's element of surprise. The unspoken message is we don't think we can get on base any other way.
ReplyDelete...might be right...
DeleteWell, it was a Max Muncy driven ass-kicking so I share your take. Though to be honest, it's more like 'I hate the Dodgers for having Max Muncy.' In 2022 he was their 8th best (by fWAR) position player. In 2022, at 2.4 fWAR, he'd have been the Giants 2nd best (by fWAR) player.
ReplyDeleteWorse, we didn't have a single positional player 3.0 or greater fWAR with Estrada topping-out at 2.7 which would have made something like 6th on the Dodgers. Meanwhile, our 8th best player was JD Davis with 1.0 fWAR.
Anyway, it's early and while I have little, if any, confidence in this team or with Zaidi, it's still too late to pull the plug. We've all seen Moneyball (which takes a number of liberties with the truth). Many of us still remember that Oakland A's season and how they went from 'suck' to the playoffs.
It's only one game.
ReplyDeleteToo early in the season to start worrying.
Then, I read something inspiring about a young Giant who always runs hard to 1B on every grounder, regardless. He takes his first step as seriously as the step crossing the 1B bag.
I assume he would take any one game, or any one early game of a season seriously and critically.
Last night was difficult to watch. Although the lineup's 7-9 batters seemed ominous at the beginning of the game (or 6-9 if Crawford is included), they did as well as anyone in the lineup except, perhaps Flores' HR and Davis 2 singles. From the game's leadoff HR by Betts, even in the futile near-rally in the 4th, you never felt the Giants would catch up. Then Kapler's "gotta-have-leverage" move in the 7th with 1-on and 2-out sealed their fate. By the time the Giants showed a little spunk it was 9-1.
ReplyDeleteKapler could do no harm in 2021 – the players bailed out every move – this year there is no magic. Had Hjelle gotten Betts out – career OPS .899 against lefties, .885 against righties, what was the leverage? – and the bottom of the 7th not cratered after loading the bases with none outs, it might have been, might have been, a better result, but, like crying, there are no if’s in baseball.
A sweep by the hated ones after a lackluster performance against the equally lackluster Royals to open the 1st homestand won’t encourage what’s left of the loyal fanbase. Without a successful 6-game road trip to Detroit and Miami – two pitching staffs near the bottom of MLB (tho Alacantra is still Alacantra, almost, Detroits SP’s are 1-7) – coming home to 8 games with the Mets and Cards (the latter having their own problems) will be challenging.
4-6 at this point is not terrible – let’s hope it’s not 4-8 by Thursday. Dustin May has been as good as Urias but is RH (probably good for SF) and Kershaw is still Kershaw (not so good for SF). OTOH, Wood is a question mark and is 2-5 against LA, but Cobb is off to a good start. The Giants really need to win ONE (at least).
You should be hating Faran- he is the one that built this mess of an organization
ReplyDeleteI’d rather see some of the younger players now in Sacramento or on the bench than the likes of bringing in free agent veterans like Ruf and Sanchez. Give Bart this season to grow and improve and stop yanking his chain. Play Ramos and Schmit — Conforto and Villar might rebound, but they’re clearly not the future. Give JD Davis a full season to show his stuff. And I’ve had enough of Joc … no doubt a good player, but he strikes out way too much and is he going to be around 2-3 years from now when the Giants’ best in-house prospects start to take hold? I’m still in favor, though, of sticking with Crawford and Yaz, simply out of respect. But it’s kind of sad they’re still in such prominent roles. Webb and Doval will be fine, but Stripling is just taking up roster space. Just my 2 cents …
ReplyDeleteYou may be right but it's too early to dismiss Villar – he has age in his favor and is at least a bridge.
DeletePederson is a 1-year deal – as good a DH as the Giants will have. This year.
Crawford and Yaz don't belong in the same sentence except that they are both signed for this year and fill needs. Very short term. Will they be back? Maybe yes and maybe no.
It's early to condemn Stripling but the manager might think about how he uses him.
Are they moving in the right direction? Well, did you like 2017, 2018, and 2019?
Yeah I disagree with first anon about Villar. He'll hit 30 bombs if they give himn 600 PA.
DeleteToo early to give up!
ReplyDeleteThe cast is better than the results...
