Down on the Farm: 7/28/2017

AAA  Round Rock Express outpaced the Sacramento River Cats 7-2:

Ryder Jones 3B- 2 for 4, HR(11).  BA= .305.
Reyes Maronita RHP- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 6.75.

-Ryder Jones is hitting .370 over his last 7 games since coming back from his hand injury.  Time to bring him back up and put him out there every day.  He won't learn to hit MLB pitching in Sacramento.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels outscored the Erie Seawolves 9-7:

Myles Schroder  - 3 for 5, HR(4).  BA= .266.
Hunter Cole RF- 3 for 3, SF.  BA= .221.
Dylan Davis DH- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .232.
Daniel Carbonell LF- 2 for 3, HR(2), BB.  BA= .223.
Tyler Cyr RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(12).  ERA= 2.65.

-The Richmond positional roster is a wasteland.

High A  Lancaster Jethawks defeated the San Jose Giants 6-5:

Steven Duggar RF- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .256.
Bryan Reynolds DH- 2 for 5.  BA= .312.
Jonah Arenado 3B- 2 for 5.  BA= .239.
Gio Brusa LF- 2 for 4.  BA= .244.
Jalen Miller 2B- 2 for 3, 2 2B, BB.  BA= .222.

-If anyone is down on Jalen Miller, remember he is just 20 yo.  He is hitting .278 over his last 10 games.

*********************************************************************************

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets beat the Columbia Fireflies 6-5:

Jose Vizcaino Jr- 3 for 4, 3B.  BA= .246.
Cristian Paulino 3B- 2 for 3, Sac, 3 SB(25).  BA= .295.
Patrick Ruotolo RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.57.

*********************************************************************************

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes topped the Boise Hawks 4-1:

Malique Ziegler CF- 1 for 4, SB(18).  BA= .299.
Logan Baldwin RF- 3 for 4, 2B, SB(6).  BA= .338.
Bryce Johnson LF- 2 for 4.  BA= .326.
Manuel Geraldo SS- 2 for 4, SB(15).  BA= .294.
Robinson Medrano DH- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .317.
Stetson Woods RHP- 5.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.75.
John Russell RHP- 3.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 8 K's, Save(2).  ERA= 2.92.

-8 K's in 3.1 IP, will catch my eye in a boxscore.

*********************************************************************************

AZL  Giants blanked the D'Backs 3-0:

Jose Layer CF- 1 for 2, BB, Sac, SB(2).  BA= .421.
Jacob Gonzalez 3B- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .353.
Diego Rincones RF- 3 for 4.  BA= .360.
Seth Corry LHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.93.
Weilly Yan RHP- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 1.99.
Olbis Parra RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's, Save(4).  ERA= 2.61.

-Giants need to consider creating a second AZL team like the Padres.  A kid like Jose Layer needs to be playing everyday and there just is not room.
-Hmm....maybe I should have made Diego Rincones my #21 prospect instead of Canario?  Rincones is having an AZL season that reminds me of Sandro Fabian last year.
-3 nice pitching lines from Corry, Yan and Parra.

DSL  White Sox outlasted the Giants 4-3 in 11 innings:

Luis Moreno RHP- 5.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.26.

-Moreno is the youngest SP prospect on the DSL squad at age 18.

  1. A few points:

    * Ryder Jones sure looked overmatched by ML pitching during his brief stay. But I suppose you're right - it doesn't seem like he has much more to learn in Sac.

    * On your prior thread comments about Hernandez in LF, I think they're playing him with an eye toward the future in CF if they move Span, either by Monday or over the winter. They don't have another ML-ready CF'er, and it makes sense to give him a long look. Aside from his ice-cold start, he's been looking pretty good. Could serve as a credible place holder for Duggar, Reynolds, Jebavy, Ziegler, SOMEBODY ....

    * On Dylan Davis, when he was drafted everyone was saying his arm was so good that he projected just as well as a pitcher, but he was insistent on hitting. Perhaps its time to sit down with him and have that discussion.

    * I think they really need to see what they have in Snelton before the winter break. Osich and Okert seem to be heartbreakers with great arms. Can either of them actually break through?

    * Also on Osich, recall he was a highly regarded starter at Oregon before TJ. He and the team preferred to stay in the pen after that to save pressure on his arm. Given his stuff and his temperament, I wonder whether he might do better at this point getting stretched out to start -- sort of a reverse Crick. He's not responding well to high-pressure relief, but the arm seems fine: it just might work.

    * Wouldn't mind moving a couple out of Kontos, Gearin, and Strickland by Monday. Too many solid possibilities for RH relief in AAA/AA who may do just as well or better, and I'd like to see them get some shots, particularly this year.

    * I have a good feeling about Bryce Johnson. Could really see him as a slap-hitting leadoff CF in a couple years.

    * Does anyone know where Stetson Woods (what a name) disappeared to before resurfacing and looking pretty good?

    1. Don't know much about him except he was drafted this year and his playing really well in Arizona, which a college draftee should.
