The Giants got a buzzkill just before game time when Johnny Cueto was a late scratch due to an "inner ear infection." Chris Stratton filled in and was a gamer but a 3-run outburst by the Tigers in the 2'nd inning was too much to overcome. Key Lines:
Joe Panik 2B- 1 for 4, 3B. BA= .277. Panik's triple drove in Denard Span, who had singled. Panik then scored on a groundout by Hunter Pence.
Chris Stratton RHP- 6.2 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 9/4. ERA= 9.00. Some things to like here. He ate some innings. He mostly kept the ball on the ground. He did not allow a run in 3.2 IP after the 3'rd inning. He had just one bad inning, the 2'nd.
Kyle Crick RHP- 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 4.05. Walks are Kyle Crick's Achilles heel. He continued to avoid them here.

Word is that Miguel Gomez (.305/.330/.458) left Richmond this morning to join the big club. He's listed as 3B but he's been playing 2B.
ReplyDeleteWith the All-Star Break coming up, they can DL Cueto and send Stratton down and go with extra position players over the weekend.
DeleteIf it is a fact that Gomez called up!
DeleteIs it a portent; that Panik maybe moved?

Does Kelby gets another guy to share few back-up innings?
DeleteCSN color guy, Brian Johnson, thought Stratton was terrific. For sure, eating innings in a lost cause beats wiping out the BP in a lost cause. This game became predictable when Cueto was scratched.
Johnson also lauded Crawford, fielding (of course) and, seemingly, hitting, overlooking 2017's indisputable fact: other than a fine start the first week and a few sporadic games, Craw has been in a full season slump.
One of Bochy's strengths is the regard his players have for him, they know he has their backs. Do you think BB is reluctant to "demote" Brian to 8th where he has been successful because it might sit wrong with Craw?
Núñez played in one rehab game (1-3) and disappeared. Baseball Reference reports that he "... is likely to remain sidelined until sometime during the middle of July." Hope he comes back HOT!
What a difference a year makes! This weekend last year was the end of one of the best starts ever, culminating with Bum's magnificent 1-hit, 28-batter shutdown of Arizona!
Wow, that would be something...Where did you hear the news?
Deletelooks like our old friend set rosin is back with us .
ReplyDeleteThe giants have a lot of above average players - panik, belt, crawford, and nunez, pence, and span (when healthy), and arroyo (after a bit more seasoning) and not enough spots in the field for everyone. The giants also we need another major star to support posey. would like to see the giants swing for the fence and trade panik and cueto, and maybe a tier two prospect for a can't miss prospect or an absolute MLB stud.
