Game Wrap 7/30/2017: Dodgers 3 Giants 2

If ever there was a microcosm of the season in one game, this was it:  An outstanding start from Madison Bumgarner, an impotent offense that got 2 leads in spite of itself, not one but 2 Blown Saves.  In the end, the Giants simply ran out of bullets against an army with more firepower.  Key Lines:

Joe Panik 2B- 3 for 5.  BA= .267.  In his first two seasons, Joe Panik's BABIPs were .330 and .345.  He slumped to an unsustainably low .245 last season.  His 3 singles tonight raised his 2017 BABIP to .281 which is still lower than his needs to be to be a successful MLB hitter.  At what point do the Giants stop waiting for his BABIP to normalize to a mean?

Conor Gillaspie PH/3B- 1 for 2, HR(2).  BA= .171.  Gillaspie appeared to put the Giants into a position to win the game with his PH HR in the 7'th, but it was his double clutch on a bouncer by leadoff batter Chase Utley in the top of the 9'th that led to the Dodgers tying it up and sending it to extra innings.

Kelby Tomlinson PH- 1 for 1, SB(6).  BA= .250.  Pinch-hitting is a tough gig but Kelby seems to be comfortable with it and came through again.  His base hit and SB set up the go-ahead run that was unfortunately erased in the bottom of the inning.

Madison Bumgarner LHP- 7 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 2.92.  Remember that nothing that happens this year is going to make any difference at all except for where the Giants draft in 2018.  What's important from this start is Bummy is apparently 100%+ recovered from his shoulder sprain which is essential for the Giants to have a chance to turn this around next season.

Sam Dyson RHP- 1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 6.32.  The run was not entirely Dyson's fault as a good defensive 3B would have thrown out Utley leading off the 9'th inning.  Once Utley was on base, though, Dyson did a terrible job of holding him at 1B and the SB set up the tying run.  That SB forced Dyson out of his rhythm which nearly caused him to lose the game right there in the 9'th inning.

Albert Suarez RHP- 0.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 4.15.  Suarez is not a closer and never will be.  He's an innings eater and it showed.  Bochy did not have great alternatives.  Kontos and Osich are gas cans right now.  Personally I would like to have seen Cricky get the call here, but I can understand why the Giants might not think he is ready for a Save situation in Dodger Stadium.

The Giants come back to the Bay Area for a cross-bay interleague series against the A's with Matt Cain taking on Sonny Gray, if Gray is still wearing an Athletics uniform by game time.

  1. Getting swept is not encouraging but, with some glaring exceptions, the pitching wasn't BAD in LA.
    Hitting is another matter.
6 double plays yesterday! Unlucky BABIP continues.
Buster can't do everything, but he did have a chance to ice the game yesterday.
Span may be past his hot streak -- is he playing too much? And against LHP?
Crawford extends his lousy season at the plate.
Belt continues to get on base but not hit.
Gillaspie should be DHing in the AL -- with consistent ABs he might hit .200 and 25 HRs.
Ah, The Future starts today. NO MORE SHOWCASING. Let's see what the kids can do! At worst we'll fall below the Phillies and the White Sox and get the FIRST PICK in June.
    Go for it!
And, please, someone take Johnny! It will only cost you a cool hundred mill! And save the Giants from that horrific contract!

  2. It is just an impression, but it seems most of the hits off Suarez are doubles. And watch out for the Reds; they've been making a move recently on the number 1 draft slot. Fortunately, they won yesterday.

  3. On a non Giants note, glad to see that Steve Bartman will be getting a 2016 WS ring from the Cubs after all he went through!

  4. No Sonny Gray tonight!
Yankees gave up 3 pretty good prospects at least 2 of them injured, 1 TJ

  5. The interest in the Giants offerings was underwhelming.
Did the Giants want too much in return?
Did the other teams not like what the Giants have?
There's a message in there somewhere but the only thing that's clear is the FO wasn't interested in dumping or improving.
The message might be: "We're just fine, there's nothing to worry about, this year is just an aberration brought about by injuries. We are a lot better at home, come out and see the Giants of the future!"

    1. They traded the one guy they had to trade and got a pretty good return.

I am not on the teardown bandwagon, so I am OK with standing pat after trading Nunez.

  6. I'm ok with the Giants making no trades. Their hands were tied with big contracts, under performance, and lack of buyers. Maybe Cueto could still be moved in August if healthy. Was pleased to read Pavolics column that their #1 priority in the off season is to fix outfield defense which means Spann will not be the starter in CF in 2018. They'll need their core players like Belt, Craw to have better years in 2018 to help turn it around. Would also help if they had a impact talent from the farm system come up as well.

    1. I all for upgrading OF defense but it had better come with a bat for LF. Maybe Austin Slater is that guy, or Chris Shaw or Mac Williamson or Ryder Jones or maybe they sign a FA or make a trade, but yeah, they need bats at LF and 3B if they want to compete in 2018.

    2. I've read that there is talk of moving Hunter Pence to LF among their moves. Hoping they can acquire a power bat or two for this lineup. That should help them score more runs.

  7. A story in Interleague for tonight's game:

The AL starting lineup has hit 105 HRs this year, the NL 54.
The NL pitcher has given up 15 in 100.2 innings, the AL 3 in 32.
Both teams are 3-7 in their last 10.

As for next year's draft, about all the Giants have to play for now. it's a brighter note: going into today's games, SF has moved ahead of the White Sox and is statistically tied with the Phillies in the fierce competition for 1st pick in the draft, but Cincy, only 2-8 in their last 10, is closing the gap.
Looking at tonight's lineup, the Giants are opting for same-ole-same-ole except that rookie Moncrief (.000) has replaced rookie Gomez (.273) in a SSSS.
The good news today is the Phillies won so the Giants are in sole possession of first in something!

    1. I don't see a single standout prospect in the 2018 draft so the Giants don't need to have the first pick. Top 5 would be nice, but it does not have to be #1 overall. In fact, I would argue that they probably don't want #1 overall because it just jacks up the size of the bonus for the same caliber of player you could get at #5.

I do already have my heart set on Brady Singer, though!

  8. ONE more thing!
The Dodgers, currently residing on a different planet, decided to play safe on the last non-waiver trade day:
They traded for pitchers Yu Darvish, Tony Watson, and Tony Cingrani, to eliminate any confusion as to who are the NBA Warriors of MLB!

In contrast, the Giants did nothing for 2017, 2018, and 20-everything else!

Wonder what the over-under is for finishing 50 games behind LA?

    1. Shaun Anderson could turn into a MLB pitcher by 2020, so it's a bit more than nothing.

    2. You're right, I was a bit frustrated, "did nothing" was too much.
I like the other kid, too, 17 year old Gregory Santos, it won't take much to make that positive down the road.

  9. Can't believe the Giants couldn't have gotten something of value for Span, even if it was a minor league prospect. They are going to have an entire new outfield next year anyway. I also think Pablo means that Panik is traded. Pablo goes back to third and Arroyo is at 2nd and the Giants get maybe a usable piece for Panik. If all hit like they can, that would be a good hitting infield with some power and good defense.

    1. They might have been able to get something of value for Span, but they also were not in a position where they had to trade him, so if they held out for more, they were justified in that.

    2. He doesn't need to play to be traded. He's running out of gas.
