Down on the Farm: DrB's 2015 Giants Top 50 Prospects Review Honorable Mention Part 2

Once again, this is a REVIEW of the 2015 list.  A new list for 2016 will be out after the Winter Meetings:

Ricky Oropesa, 1B.  AA:  .254/.311/.424, 17 HR in 453 AB.

The 17 HR was tied for 4'th best in the EL while the OPS of .734 was 14'th.  Ricky was still plagued by slumps.  He can hope for an assignment to Sacramento next season.  Stock- slightly up.

Angel Villalona, 1B.  High A:  .249/.334/.447, 13 HR in 257 AB.

Solid offensive season and came on strong in August and the September Cal League playoffs.  No telling what he might do if he got himself into better shape.  Stock- slightly up.

Jeff Arnold, Catcher.  High A:  .250/.370/.382 in 68 AB.

Didn't play much, presumably due to injury.  Love him as a player, but the injuries might be too much to overcome.  Stock- down due to apparent long term injury issues.

Phil McCormick, LHP.  AA:  4-3, 2.04, 57.1 IP, 21 BB, 38 K's, GO/AO= 2.33.

Lefty reliever who puts the ball on the ground and can go multiple innings.  Hmm….who does that remind us of?  Stock- Up

Carlos Alvarado, RHP.  Low A:  2-1, 3.75, 24 IP, 12 BB, 26 K.

Last appearance was 7/7/2015 presumably due to injury.  Stock- Down.

Dan Slania, RHP.  High A:  4-5, 3.53, 71.1 IP, 15 BB, 90 K's, 16 Saves.

Terrific K and BB rates.   Headed to the Arizona Fall League.  Stock- Up!

Bryce Bandilla, LHP.  DNP.  Not sure if he is still in the organization.

Elliott Blair, OF.  DNP.  Not sure if he is still in the organization.  Stock- Down.

Ben Turner, Catcher.  High A:  .267/.317/.333, 2 HR in 180 AB.  AAA:  .293/.359/.337 in 92 AB.

The man with the great K/BB.  Like his bat.  Apparently the Giants liked Trevor Brown's D better.  Stock- Stable.

Brandon Bednar, IF.  High A:  .237/.277/.327, 3 HR in 346 AB.

Didn't get much traction this season in a mostly backup role for SJ.  Stock- Down.

  1. Bandilla is on Twitter. I spoke to him recently there and he said he's still in the organization, rehabbing from surgery. May have had the world's quietest TJ.

  2. I believe Bryce Bandilla and Elliott Blair are still in the organization. Blair was hurt on April 10, 2015 but I am not sure what the injury was. Bandilla's Twitter page says he is a "Pitcher in the SF Giants organization" so I am guessing he is hurt too. They may just be organizational filler at this point. Bryce is 25 and Elliott is 27.

  3. Villalona must be coming up on minor league fa right? He's 25 and has nothing nore than moderate high A success.

The giants were nice enough to keep him in the org after he fell flat in AA again, but he has to understand this is probably his last spring before he's part of the mass minor league release party in March.

  4. What the #%? Reports are coming in that there is no deal with Eddy Julio Martinez. Hopefully this is a mistake. Bobby Evans acknowledged the signing.

  5. not a great start to the offseason....giants and martinez no longer have a deal

    1. According to Kiley McDaniel, in an answer to my question on his Fangraphs chat today, Martinez previous agent got "greedy" back in July and the market collapsed on him. Maybe, though, it wasn't the agent so much as the player. Seems like he might be still trying to play the market and use the Giants published offer as leverage. If he's that squirrely and goes back on his word that easily, then maybe he is not a good fit for the Giants.

    2. Ya, from the outside looking in it seems like Martinez and his crew are using the Giants. Reports are that he only wants $500K more. Will the Giants pony up or are they ticked off and out as a suitor? You had to wonder why it's taken Martinez this long to sign what with the rumors out there for so long.

  6. Just an FYI, Blair voluntarily retired. I remember when he announced it, but can't remember exactly when it was. Anyhow, he's no longer with the organization.
