Down on the Farm: 9/19/2015

High A  Rancho Cucamonga Quakes completed a sweep of their best of 5 series with the San Jose Giants 5-0:

Brandon Bednar(2B)- 2 for 4.  BA= .262.
Steven Duggar(RF)- 2 for 4.  BA= .286.
Christian Jones(LHP)- 4.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 0.96.

All stats are for the postseason only.  I had not noticed Steven Duggar's name in the SJ boxscores, but he held his own in a promo for the playoffs.  Jones was perfect through 4 IP with 7 K's.  He didn't get completely stretched out from being a long reliever, but has pitched well enough in a starter role to be someone to watch for next season.

This concludes the minor league season.  I hope you have enjoyed reading Down on the Farm.  I'll probably take a day or two to figure out where to take the minor league coverage into and through the offseason.  There are so many places to get information nowadays, it's hard to think of new and original things to say and different ways of looking at the minor league system.

  1. I can't believe they started the clock ticking on Williamson by calling him up. But since he's up, I think the OF should be Perez, Parker & Williamson till the end of the season. Give those boys a work-out and see what they can make of MLB pitching.

  2. Thanks for all you do, Doc. We know it takes a ton of time and effort and you receive no compensation other than your own personal joy from creating the "go to" site for many of us and the connections you've made with others that love baseball and the Giants. The stats you provide, as well as your insightful comments on individual players is very helpful, but the stats would be even more informative if we had an idea of how the players are doing in a league wide context. For example, player ages relative to league average age and how their various stats rank within the league would be awesome. Of course that would be more work for you!

    1. I do try to throw league context in there from time to time. It would be almost an impossible task on a daily basis. I will try to include bit more of that in my Top 50 profiles.

  3. Hey. One thing I'm continually thinking about is: who on the farm is most untouchable?

Those few, select prospects we shouldn't even consider trading. Different factors, different reasons. Position of future need, immediate depth/coverage for our SF club, high potential, versatility, whatever. I wonder if you - and others here - would care to share your thoughts?

Personally, I don't like the notion of trading off our 25-man to fill one need and then create another. If we trade away the bench depth of Tomlinson, for instance, I'd hope it's only because we have another solution for a UT. Obviously, I'll hope we don't trade ALL of our top arms away. I mean, keep at least one or two of them, right? And yeah, I mean *even if* we were to sign David Price or trade for a frontline starter. I'm thinking of maybe the 5-8 guys we can least afford to part with. I'm quite certain opinions will vary, which could make for interesting conversation. Cheers.

    1. While the Giants have a deep farm system, I don't know that they have anyone who is "untouchable." I would hate to see them trade Bickford or Lucious Fox so soon. Beyond that, I'm not sure there is anyone I would not include in the right trade.

    2. Good stuff, fair enough. Interesting that you mention Lucius Fox. I had in my mind a short list of maybe four players:

-- Blackburn: immediate injury insurance and depth for SF. Possibly even long relief if needed.
-- Chris Shaw: power is so hard for us to find/sign. Not even sure where he'd play in the future, though.
-- Miguel Gomez: that versatility of a potential switch-hitting catcher-slash-corner infielder is so valuable.
-- Jake Smith: our future closer? Or maybe we can cover if he's traded in some deal? Slania, Black, Broadway, Strickland, Osich, Law, Crick and enough other guys with future closer potential?

Obviously, lots depends on who we're trading for. If Williamson is part of a trade package for some one-year rotation rental it'd (obviously) be different than if he were traded for an outfielder. Maybe some people feel Garcia is our future catcher that moves Posey to 1B (personally, I'm not convinced on this notion). Hunter Cole? Arroyo? I'm with you... And the more cost-controlled years and more elite the talent in return, the fewer who are relatively 'untouchable.' Cheers.

  4. Hey Doc, another great season for the Giants farm. More homegrown guys infiltrating (and impacting) the major league roster, and lots of new talent via the draft and international free agency. Sounds like the Giants are still working hard on Eddy Julio Martinez. Man, I would probably lose my mind if they made that one happen.

Thanks again for your hard work. I couldn't agree more with your statement about finding new ways to be original. I've only had the blog for a couple years, and in that short time it seems like the interest in Giants minor leagues (and minors in general) has really taken off. It's not a bad thing at all, but I feel like there are many other people "uncovering" players in the depths of the system these days. Sometimes I do wonder if people still find my material "fresh."

  5. Thanks for the Minor League coverage. I love following the minors and this is the first place I check everyday. Lots of interesting information in an easy to read format. If I need to dig deeper you seem to always suggest places to look. Thanks again.

  7. Thank you so much for the minor league coverage DrB! You are the first Giants blogger that I tuned into and your takes on the farm system are entertaining as always. With social media, there's a lot of people who are uncovering prospects after prospects but I still wait for your take because in time, I have come to respect yours along with Mr. ogc and Mr. CC's and others takes on them more than the newer guys.

This year is a solid year for us. More positives than the negatives I say. I am hoping that this floodway of overachieving prospects in the farm will continue and they'll help the Giants to win more championships! Your efforts throughout the year are unparallel! I look forward to your rankings in the offseason DrB!
