Spring Training Game Wrap 3/7/2015: Padres 7 Giants 6

The Giants regulars fell behind early and a comeback led by the minor leaguers fell short.  Key Lines:

Angel Pagan(CF)- 1 for 1, BB.  BA= .400.  Again, good to see Pagan on the field and doing good things.

Gary Brown(CF)- 1 for 2, 2B, BB.  BA= .300.  In addition to the good stuff in his boxscore line, Brownie also got to show off his blazing speed taking the extra base on what would have been a single for most players and going from first to home on Belt's double.  Brownie definitely looks bigger and stronger than I remember from past years.

Brandon Belt(1B)- 2 for 3, 2B.  BA= .429.  Is this Belt's breakout year?

Daniel Carbonell had a sac fly.
Christian Arroyo had a hit.
Mitch Delfino drew a couple of walks.

Madison Bumgarner- 2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 14.73.  Bummy said he felt better today than in his first game.

Tim Lincecum- 2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 9.00.  Very nice looking K and BB numbers.  Gave up a longball to Wil Myers.  Timmy has 7 K's against 1 BB in 3 IP in his first two spring appearances.

Hunter Strickland- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K.  ERA= 12.00.  Avoiding dingers is a good place to start for Strickland.

Jean Machi- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.  Machi seeems to be ready to start the season.

Cody Hall- 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 9.00.  Hall strikes out the side but gives up a dinger to Rymer Liriano.

The Giants signed troubled RHP Alfredo Aceves to a minor league deal.  Broken pitchers seek out the Giants.  Some of them get fixed.

Around the League:  Yu Darvish unsurprisingly has a partial tear of his UCL.  Is debating whether to undergo TJ surgery, but after a full offseason of rest and rehab, this would seem to be his best option.

  1. Brown: I really hope Brown's play the past few games is indicative of a new approach at the plate rather than statistical bubble.
Lincecum: Frustrating! All those strike outs and he's still got a 9.0 ERA.
Belt: Honestly, I really thought he was breaking out last year until all the injuries side-lined him. Glad to see he's hitting well, now, though.
Machi: I like him. I also like Kontos. I personally feel that we should keep both. I think Kontos could take Lopez's spot as a lefty specialist, BUT is good enough for long-relief, too.
Arroyo: Glad to see he's been hitting and I hope this carries over when he jumps to AA this year.

    1. No room for both both Machi and Kontos unless one of the 6 starters and/or Petit go on DL.

    2. I think he could replace Lopez without any serious risk of a major fall-off as Kontos was very strong against lefties in 2011 (.200), 2012 (.164) & 2014 (.143) with 2013 (.328) being a bad, fairly outlier-type of year. I have major doubts that it would be considered, never mind actually happening. But Lopez is getting old and if I can find a young guy to take his place with equal results, I'd seriously consider it if I were the GM.

It's not going to happen. But I'd rather trade/release Lopez than Kontos.

    3. Hope they both have a good spring. Things work themselves out at the end.

Brown can be a good story, if something simple like merely seeing the world differently with a new attitude is involved here. Changes like that cannot be predicted by statistical regressions or projections.

    4. I would not under any circumstances replace Lopez with Kontos. All those splits are extremely small sample sizes. You know just from the types of pitches he throws that he's going to be vulnerable to RH batters. Plus, as you said, the Giants would never do something like that, and with very good reason, IMO.

  2. Lots of interesting possibilities in the OF, we can hope
    Brownie has turned his corner.
Maxie finds his stroke before the hole is too deep.
Perez(ee) hangs in, is he out of options yet?
Parker is giving it a go -- last hurrah?
Carbonell needs a good year in Sac.
    And then there's Mac(ee).....
And Ish and White Shark and...and...and
Nate is 1 for 4 and the Rangers need pitchers more than we do!

  3. Brown-Making a run at one of the OF spots.I think with Pence's injury he makes it.
Strickland-just needs to continue to throw strikes.I think he has less than 20 innings pitched so far.He just needs to settle in.
Carbonell-The sac fly was hit hard.Like what I see so far.
Lincecum-I think it's safe to say Lincecum wasn't putting the work he needed to put in,during the off season. He looks like a different pitcher. He threw strikes.Kept the ball down. His mechanics looked crisp. It's amazing what being in shape can do for a guy.
Arroyo-Keep Hitting.Looks like he might stay at SS.
Williamson-Showed good speed for a big guy on the infield hit.Would be nice to see him,Brown,or Carbonell make the team.

    1. I won't count Brownie out of a roster spot, but he needs a monster spring all the way to the end of spring training to have a chance.

I hope Lincecum can have a better season. I don't think he is that far away, even though I don't expect him to regains more than a MPH or 2 in velocity. He does that with better command and he might have a chance to turn in a good season. Then the Giants will have another dilemma with whether to re-sign him or not next offseason.

I think Brown or Carbonell might have a chance. Maxwell has been slow out of the chute and the kids might be passing him up here. Williamson needs some salt in AA after missing all last season.

    2. I think Brown finally understands his role. It's gonna be nice to have him contribute.I would take Brown and Carbonell for their speed alone.I think the bats will be solid.Lincecum looks sharp. It would be a huge shot in the arm if he had a good season. If he does.I can see us giving him a 4 yr deal.

    3. Carbonell has two miscues in 2 games in the field, throwing to 3rd when there was no play then a boot.
He'll learn, but he's not ready. Brown and Perez are well ahead of him. this year.

    4. Well, there's a hot news flash!

  4. Belt has had monster ST's before for what it's worth. Staying healthy is his biggest obstacle at this point.

I guess Brown realizes his careers on the line and there's an opportunity on the table with Pence missing a some time.
Now I'm wondering if Brown turns into something, and Aoki is what they expected, the Giants explore a Pagan trade mid season.... ownership would probably block it though, I'd reckon.

The Hector, Susac situation, and the Adrianza situation are still confusing me.

    1. Not sure why you would say ownership would block a Pagan trade. If the baseball people convinced them a cheaper player could do the job and they could get value in return, why wouldn't ownership approve? Gotta think through these kinds of comments before you post them if you don't want your comment to $&#%, if you get my hint.
