Spring Training Game Wrap 3/12/2015: Giants 7 White Sox 4

I"m going to just ignore the Will Ferrell silliness and focus on the game here.  A few position battles started to take shape as the Giants topped the ChiSox in Glendale, AZ.  Key Lines:

Brandon Hicks(PH-DH)- 1 for 1, HR(1), BB, SB(1).  BA= .231.  Hicks is not competing for a MLB position, but may be auditioning for another organization or for a minor league gig with the Giants.

Travis Ishikawa(1B)- 1 for 2, HR(1), 3 BB.  BA= .500.   At this point, Travis would have to go 0 for the rest of the spring or get injured to lose a roster spot.

Hector Sanchez(Catcher)- 2 for 3, 2B.  BA= .333.  Don't look now, but The Hector is winning the backup catcher job and it's not real close at this point.

Justin Maxwell(RF)- 2 for 4.  BA= .188.  Maxwell started the spring ice cold, but the last roster spot is his to lose.  Now that his bat has awakened, if he continues to hit, I think he will be starting in the OF for the Giants on Opening Day and will hang around at least until Pence gets off the DL.

Gary Brown(CF)- 0 for 2.  BA= .235.  As Maxwell's bat heats up, Brown's is fading.

Matt Duffy(2B)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .294.  Man, do I ever wish there was a roster spot for The Duffman!  Alas, he will likely start the season in AAA barring a late spring training trade.

Ehire Adrianza(SS)- 1 for 3, HBP, CS.  BA= .235.  And Adrianza is a lock for a roster spot barring a trade.  He would never clear waivers.

Madison Bumgarner(LHP)- 2.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 9.95.  Rocky first inning, then settled down.

Joan Gregorio(RHP)- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 0.00.  Gregorio's stock is on the rise.  He will likely start the season in San Jose with an outside shot at AA if he continues to impress in camp.

Chris Stratton(RHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 6.00.  Another frustrating appearance for Stratton.  Probably ticketed for AA.

Hunter Strickland(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 7.20.  I don't see a roster spot for Strickland unless somebody starts the season on the DL or somebody gets traded.

Steven Okert(LHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 2.70.  Okert has been impressive in camp.  He is auditioning for a AAA gig and a shot at replacing whichever one of Lopez or Affeldt's contracts is up next year or maybe eventually being a 3'rd lefty in the pen this year.

Jean Machi(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 4.50.  The 5'th an final non-reserve-starter bullpen slot is Machi's to lose.  He tightened his grip on it today.

The Giants play the Rangers tomorrow afternoon.  Not sure who is pitching.  Peavy?

  1. If Sanchez doesn't pull a muscle, take a few consecutive pitches off his mask, or go nearly oh-fer the rest of camp -AND- (a logical AND, both conditions are necessary) Lincecum gets the 5th slot, Hector will be Timmy's catcher every 5th game.
But there's still a long way to go and either guy can go bad, but they are connected, as they have been almost forever.
Susac? Raley field is 84.6 miles from AT&T.
Maxwell may well be the 3rd outfielder, replacing Aoki not Blanco!

    1. I should say that Juan P is still very much in the mix, but I am getting the feeling Maxwell is the guy the Giants want to win a roster spot.

  2. I am surprised that Ishikawa is not playing the OF. I know he will not be very good OF. etc. etc. But it is spring training; we know he can play 1B, and we need someone to fill in OF.
