Down on the Farm: 9/7/2011 Playoff Edition

AA Richmond vs Harrisburg postponed.

High A SJ Giants have a bye in the first round.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets defeated the Savannah Sand Gnats 4-1:

Robert Haney(SS)- 1 for 3, 2 BB.
Adam Duvall(3B)- 2 for 4, HR.
Mike Kickham(LHP)-6.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 10/3.
Brett Bochy(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save.

Duvall continues his power hitting ways into the post-season. Very solid start for Kickham. Melonhead Jr. gets the Save.

Crawford, Brown and Panik are going to the Arizona Fall League. The Giants have not named their 3 pitching representatives. They will all have to have played in AA or above as Brown and Panik fill the quota of 2 players allowed from below AA.

BTW, I wish I had the $$$ and the contacts to start a fall league here in the Inland Empire. Perfect baseball weather here in the fall. It'd be for players below AA.

Jake Dunning sprained an ankle rolling it on a bat while backing up a play at the plate so SJ may be without their closer for the playoffs.

  1. Wow, Doc, love the vision and ambition of starting a fall league.

I can't imaging they're very profitable in and of themselves. Are they subsidized by MLB?

Anyway, I encourage you to pursue it. I mean, talk about a labor of love. I have to believe that you would be able to get a meeting with a few key people to talk about the feasibility of your it.

I know you're just making a light, conversational comment. But I say take it to the next small step if you believe in it.

    (There, motivational rant over)

  2. indy and college summer leagues have increased in popularity over the years

would be great if some enterprising individuals could work out something with the mlb and indy leagues to get a fall league in either cal or fl for players under aa level

very true that the weather is perfect from oct to nov

not sure which pitchers giant would send...hembree says he is gonna be shut down...verdugo?
richmond/harrisburgh rained and flooded out...so series will begin in richmond on friday night....richmond gets 2 games at home....nice plus for a very strong richmond fan base

oh, and the scorpions are gonna have an as lineup

  4. Kelly,

Thanks for the props to the idea but I don't have the time, $$$ or connections. Seems like maybe the local minor league team owners in San Berdoo, Rancho Cucamonga and Lake Elsinore might get together and sponsor something like that. They already have the marketing people and it would create a use for the stadiums after the minor league seasons are over.

    Bacci,

agreed on Belt. They need to decide if he's fish or fowl(or giraffe). If he's not ready yet, stick him in Fresno and leave him there all year. If he is ready, play him every day at the big league level so he can make that last adjustment.

  5. One more thought on a fall league. I think you'd get some attendance. People really like to watch baseball in SoCal and that woud be the only game in town in the fall, well, unless the Dog or Angels made the playoffs. Ugh!!

It would be a place where top draft picks who signed late could come to get some game action. Remember Buster and Roger Kieschnick playing in Hawaii?

A lot of these players hail from here in SoCal. Ricky Oropesa is from Etiwanda. They'd sell at least 10-15 tickets to just to friends and family who wanted to see him play! Gerrit Cole is from SoCal. I think Susac is too. It seems like a perfect fit!

  6. My guess is that Correa will be one of the three.
    King may be another one.

  11. Bacci,

I kind of think Marc Kroon can take care of himself and his family whether he gets the call or not. Don't you think you might be getting just a little too enmeshed in these guy's personal lives?

Look, these guys are ballplayers and we're ball fans. Whether they get called up or released should be decided on the ball field.

  12. miss my point

i think that he looks happy...so who would want to spoil that

    wasnt a negative post

dont think he needs the call up anymore

  13. Doesn't change my mind on Kroon being called up.

Kroon's family can spare him 3 for weeks so he can finish up his career in the major leagues.

But, I realize that I probably care more about this than he does.
