Down on the Farm: 9/5/2011

AAA Fresno Grizzlies outslugged the Tacoma Rainiers 12-9:

Justin Christian(RF)- 1 for 3, HR(10). BA= .338.
Brad Eldred(1B)- 3 for 5, HR(23). BA= .278.
Max Ramirez(DH)- 3 for 5, 2 HR(13). BA= .278.
Marc Kroon(RHP)- 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 5.11.

A mighty fine season for Christian. Will he get an opportunity a la Andres Torres? Eldred was a Mr Do-It-All for the Grizzlies. Max Ramirez can obviously hit. He doesn't seem to be able to play catcher, or any other position and there's no DH in the NL. He's probably a MILB lifer or else needs to be in an AL organization.

Richmond Flying Squirrels edged the Altoona Curve 2-1 in a game completed early, presumably due to the weather:

Francisco Peguero(RF)- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .309.
Jason Stevenson(LHP)- 7 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 1.29.

Stevenson gets sent to Richmond after two starts for Fresno.

High A Rancho Cucamonga Quakes scored 6 runs in the top of the 9'th inning to down the San Jose Giants 7-5:

Gary Brown(CF)- 1 for 3, HBP, 2 SB(53). BA= .336.
James Simmons(LF-RF)- 2 for 4, HR(10). BA= .270.
Chris Heston(RHP)- 6 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.16.

These two teams may well meet again in the Cal League Championship series. Jurica, Joseph and Burg also had 2 hits each.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets edged the Rome Braves 3-2:

Kelby Tomlinson(SS)- 2 for 4. BA= .333.
Joel Weeks(1B)- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .295.
Taylor Rogers(RHP)- 7 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 10/4. ERA= 2.91.

Thanks to Bacci, who keeps track of these things for letting us know the 'Jackets made the SAL playoffs giving the Giants 4 playoff teams out of 7 in their minor league system.

  1. baggs is reporting that the open spot on the 40 will be used to move someone up from fresno...he thinks hall....i was hoping kroon (no dice) could be christian or one of the other long suffereing org guys

i wish kroon the best and hope he stays in organized baseball in some fashion...think he has a lot to give over

playoffs for minor leaguers are a double edged sword...some of these guys just want to get out of the daily grind already...but most seem really juiced...monell has been tweeting up a storm

anyway...was a good season on the farm, an ya, i do give props to sabean for the changes he made by putting evans in charge

  2. btw, mach has won over 1500 games as a minor league manager...that is a feat

he also is a great guitarist and singer and is well liked by his players

so again, props to sabes and company for putting together some very good milb coaching staffs

  3. I wonder what happened with Machemer in Norwich when Nate and Travis were there. Something definitely went down that season. I just don't know what.

  4. doc,

tidrow is a genius at finding and developing pitchers, wasnt all that good at overseeing the farm system...seems he wasnt great at communicating with his managers and coaches...note a lot of guys from that era now gone

remember when mach made some statement about "following orders" instead of going for wins?

and ct was just a bad situation for everyone involved...bad park...no fan support...little community support...wears on everyone

shoot...im still fighting with the hard core guys about the park

this, despite the fact that the kids playing there now, have openly voiced their disdain for the park...and they are in ss and get to start well into summer

dont think any of the players ever had a bad word to say about mach

but note the change in all management style up and down the farm system, since evans took over

proof that you can indeed play to win and develop at the same time

  5. I'm still holding out hope that the last roster spot goes to Heath Hembree.

  6. Hembree was my thought too, but Giants Nirvana says Schuman tweeted that it isn't him.

  7. justin christian is the call up

    which i guess is ok

right now bunch of people are trying to pump this as the next torres, but his story is not quite as compelling....and he did have a cup of coffee last season with the yanks

  8. correction, christian's cup o coffee was in 08

again, nice story, but not as compelling as torres

    wish the guy luck

  9. I know the reality of the situation (ERA over 5), but damnit, is there no realistic way to get Kroon up? Does he have to be on the 40-man for the call up?

I'm not saying pitch the guy (except for blowouts), just give him a little bit back for his effort.

  10. once the giants are eliminated, or close to it, see no reason why zito and wilson cannot be placed on 60 and kroon be called back

only needs to throw to one batter

be like the one day contract to jt

let the guy go out in style

if he can k the guy...that would be sweet

  11. Bacci,

Not sure how you can say that Christian's story is not as compelling at Torres. Do you know Christian's story? Dude's 30 years old and has been kicking around the minors forever. I think they signed him out of the Mexican Winter League like Vogelsong. The guy has to have a story. Let's hear it before we go saying it's not as compelling as Torres'.

  12. OK Bacci,

You might just want to check out Baggs latest missive on Christian. Grew p a Giants fan in the Will Clark era. Was told by no less an authority than Dr James Andrews that he would probably never play baseball again. Then underwent a newly developed procedure on his shoulder.

Is that compelling enough for you?

  13. i knew some of the stuff before

made a mistake on the yanks thing...thought that cuz he was in their system last season, he had gotten called up

new he was a local kid, undrafted, another indy league discovery....didnt know his shoulder injury was that severe

knew about the mexican league thing at start of season (cuz i read the stuff the squirrels put out)

but nothing really gets me teary eyed

unless he was running around the bay area sans shoes

happy for him...and it did work out tonite

anyone really surprised that its the misfits that are giving the team a shot in the arm?

thats what the giants are all about

    ReplyDelete
  14. The misfits are doing good, but Beltran is red hot too and he's not exactly a misfit. You need that hammer, the guy who can carry the team on his back, in the middle of the lineup to prop everything else up.
