Game Wrap 9/2/2011: Giants 6 D'Backs 2

The Giants got a typically solid game from Matt Cain and this time, the offense gave him the runs to get the Win. The Carlos Beltran the Giants thought they traded for showed up and put on an offensive show supported by Cody Ross, Jeff Keppinger and yes, from Matthew Thomas Cain! Key Lines:

Cody Ross- 2 for 3, 2B, HR(11), BB. BA= .232. Ross has done some good things out of the leadoff spot this year. Despite his somewhat anemic BA, his OPB is one of the higher ones on the team.

Jeff Keppinger- 1 for 4, 2B. BA= .303. Kepp has been red hot. He drove in the first run tonight with a double off the LF wall that just missed being a HR. He then rode home on Beltran's blast of left-center.

Carlos Beltran- 4 for 4, 3B, HR(17). BA= .290. This is the Beltran the Giants traded their top pitching prospect for, the kind of player who can put a team on his back and carry them. Stay hot Carlos!

Matt Cain- 1 for 2, BB. BA= .109. Cainer started two rallies to help his own cause. He da man!

Matt Cain- 8 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 2.85. Maybe not as dominant as he can be, but a horse as always. Dude just will not give in!

With the Win, the Giants inched closer to the lead in the NL West now trailing the Dangerous D'Backs by 5 games. Realistically, the Giants need to sweep this series to get back into the race. You can't sweep if you don't win the first one!

Timmy takes the mound tomorrow evening facing 17 game winner Ian Kennedy who always seems to be tough on the Giants.

  1. think beltran got a call from the agent and was reminded that his play was gonna cost him millions?

i just wish he would admit that he doesnt have the stuff to play in rf at the belle...nothing to be ashamed of, most dont

i think the addition by subtraction and putting kids on the bench has imbued them (for at least 2 games) with some life

they can spin rowand and miggs anyway they want, but those guys brought the team down...i hear their lockers were grabbed immediately...this can be a cold biz

kepp is the kinda player i like to see picked up at the deadline...role player coming from a miserable situation, who has something to prove

giants wont have to worry too much if freddie cant start on day one, or ends up on the dl again

gonna be a pitchers duel tomorrow...i dont expect to see timmy quit on the team this time

  2. I listened to the game. The ump Davidson seemed to be drunk or something like that because his strike zone was not too consistent. Announcers thought Cain should have had 15 more strike calls. Cain was impressive not yielding to that frustration and doing well in spite of that. Good example for everyone else of how not to let things you cannot control frustrate you.

  3. Nice to see Beltran have a game. Bacci is right though. He's not quite an AT&T right-fielder. He did have a nice catch and throw to the plate from the right field line though. But Nate or Cody would have caught the Roberts drive into triples alley.

Is there any sort of record-keeping for 5-3 ground outs? Because Huff HAS to own it. It would be nice, for a change of pace, if Huff could do a little work with Meulens figure out some other way to make his outs.

So many options for 1B...Belt, DeRosa, Pill. But no. Huff is, by far, the team leader in ABs.

Great game. Not even thinking about post-season unless we finish the job this weekend. Even then, it'll be tough...

  4. 4-3 Ground outs for Huff, I mean. Grounders to 2nd.

  5. I think Beltran has been hurt. We saw the real deal tonight. Hopefully that means his hand is feeling better. I think it's really unfair to attribute it all on motivation.

Not so sure about Nate being better in RF. He knows the park better than Beltran, yes, but I think it's too easy for us fans to look at a play and say "JT woulda had it." or "Nate woulda had it." That's actually a very hard thing to tell. Kinda like trying to judge pitch velocity with the naked eye. You really need zone ratings from a large sample size to say who's the better fielder and even that is a bit shaky.

  6. Oh, I know that it's just my opinion/gut feeling that Nate or Ross would have had that.

Regarding Beltran's hand, I think he said post-game that batting RH he feels fine, but his hand is still giving him trouble LH. So, unfortunately, I don't think his injury is behind him.

  7. What do people think about Keppinger playing SS? Yeaj I know he is not your ideal SS, but premier players will demand a lot of money and long term contracts, and we have a few in the system, who has a chance to be a big league SS. If we cannot ink a top player for SS, would Keppinger make sense to fill in?

  8. From what I have seen Kepp doesn't even have a plus arm at 2B, so SS will not work. I really don't think we need a premier bat at SS with our pitching. We just need a guy like Crawford with great D. With Posey coming back and either Sanchez or Kepp at 2B, the only question mark in the infield is Huff. He needs to be on the bench until he can prove his worth. If I see another lame groundout to 2B I think I am going to be sick. I think Sabean will make one decent signing in the offseason. Maybe Beltran on a 1 or 2 year deal.

  9. I agree that SS is not the position you seek offense from. We have Posey (hopefully coming back at close to 100%) who can provide extra offense from a primarily defensive position. So Crawford like defense with a .230 BA will be sufficient, if we can upgrade the offensive positions (e.g., LF, 1B), to what they should be. 1B has a lot of candidates (Huff, Belt, Panda, Belt), but a corner outfielder is necessary. I also expect some body from the farm system to step up (Peguero, Brown, Ford?)
