Down on the Farm: 9/1/2011

AAA Fresno Grizzlies defeated the Reno Aces 4-1:

Justin Christian(RF)- 2 for 4, HR(9), SB(34). BA= .333.
Conor Gillaspie(3B)- 2 for 3, HR(11), BB. BA= .297.
Scott Munter(RHP)- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. BA= 5.75.

If the Giants are looking for lightning in a bottle, Justin Christian would be as good a bet as anybody right now.

AA New Britain Rock Cats blanked the Richmond Flying Squirrels 8-0:

As you might imagine from the score, nothing to see here.

High A San Jose Giants beat the Bakersfield Blaze 5-2:

Gary Brown(CF)- 2 for 4, 2B, BB. BA= .338.
Ehire Adrianza(SS)- 2 for 4, 2B, BB. BA= .304.
Hector Sanchez(C)- 1 for 3, HR(11), 2 BB. BA= .300.
Jarrett Parker(RF)- 1 for 3, HR(13), HBP. BA= .261.
Eric Surkamp(LHP)- 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Addison Proszek(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 1.00.

This is just a stopover for Surkamp between MLB starts. He was dominant here.

Low A Rome Braves downed the Augusta Greenjackets 6-1:

Devin Harris(RF)-2 for 3, HR(15). BA= .231.
Mike Kickham(LHP)- 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 4.11.

Kickham's K and BB numbers have always been better than his ERA, this game no exception.

Short Season Tri-City Dust Devils topped the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 7-2:

Matt Graham(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 8.66.

Panik and Staley had 2 hits each. Galindo stole his 46'th base.

  1. Panik's numbers are looking GOOD. let's hope he doesn't flame out with the bat like Crawford..

Also, what are the thoughts on Duvall? Kid putting up big unsustainable numbers at a low level, or a decent prospect?

  2. Thinking of Panik (looking real good) and Crawford (not hitting anywhere)..I start thinking about Adrianza...The kid is only 21....and I know the Cal League is a hitters league..but it looks like he finally has gotten it...Guess we'll find out next year when he is moved To Richmond...With crawford needing at least a year in the minors to try and learn how to hit and both Panik and Adrianza ready to move up, it should be intersting next year and hopefully a dog fight for short by 2013.Who plays short in SF next year is another question!!

  3. And Conor just keeps raking :)

  4. Conor raking? I'm not sure I would call what he's doing raking. He's hitting .303 over his last 10 which is pretty close to his overall .297 which is pretty close to average for a PCL hitter, especially in the division Fresno plays in.

Conor has had a good season, but not the kind that has me campaigning for the Giants to move Pablo to 1B so Conor can play 3'rd next year.

Crawford had a good half season in San Jose. That's it. He struggled his junior year in college and has struggled to hit after the San Jose stop. Panik hit all the way through college and hasn't missed a beat so far in the pros. From everything I've read, I'd have to say Crawford is the better fielding SS, but I would rate Panik as the much better hitting prospect.

  5. Oh, and don't know about Duvall. He's not a young prospect. He'll have to keep proving it at higher levels.

  6. Reported in the Chronicle: San Jose center fielder Gary Brown was named California League Rookie of the Year. Salem-Keizer shortstop Joe Panik, the Giants' top draft choice this year, was named MVP of the short-season Northwest League.

  7. craw got his k rate way down this season, which means he is seeing the ball and making contact

the time in the afl will help him work on his hitting (wish hawaii was still around so he could be facing guys with nasty breaking stuff)

i still see him in play as the starting ss next season...his d is just too good

and doc, if the giants dont sweep this weekend, then they are out of it, and i think it would be a nice gesture to use that extra place on the 40 and bring up kroon

quick note, salk was officially eliminated last nite...wonder if they will send panik to sj,

  8. I like the way Bradon Crawford plays SS, that's for sure. The problem with the AFL is it's even more of a hitter's league than the PCL.

Not on the Kroon bandwagon, but to each his own.

  9. BTW, SFGate is reporting that the Giants are close to resolving their financial issues with Angel Villalona which would clear the way for him to rejoin the organization. He would start out in the Dominican Academy while waiting to get a visa to the US. The history of other players in similar circumstances would suggest the visa should not be a big stumbling block.

Angel V is only 21 YO so still has time to develop as a prospect despite the lost time. The Dominican legal system sounds like a cesspool. If I was Angel V, I wouldn't set foot back there once I got back to the US any more than I absolutely had to.

  10. One more note: Clayton Tanner signed with the Reds.

  11. I was really hoping Christian would've been promoted to the 40-man roster in time for playoff eligibility, but oh well.

I don't like Richmond's playoff chances for the moment. Losing both Surkamp and Tanner, two of their five starters, is huge for a team that struggles offensively (sound familiar?). They've had to resort of using Skyler Stromsmoe as a pitcher in two of their last four games.

  12. im taking it that tanner and the giants couldnt come to an agreement, and he asked and got his release

makes sense that he would get picked up quick

as for angel, the only way he could stay in the states during the off season, is if the giants work out something with the state dept...given the circumstance, dont think that would be all that hard...he is at risk for ever going back, and im sure they will work to get him residency status

ya, its too bad that richmond is gonna miss out on the playoffs...very supportive fans there
