The Giants were facing essential elimination from the postseason race against the ace of the top team they need to pass to make it. But wait! The Giants had an ace of their own and Madison Bumgarner showed why he is one of the great clutch pitchers of all time with a 7-inning, 1-hit shutout effort. Mike Yastrzemski was the hitting hero but Bummy casually reached base 3 times in 3 PA's himself. Key Lines:
Brandon Belt- 1 for 4, BB. BA= .235. For all his struggles, Belt still has an OBP of .347, the most of any Giants player with more than 160 PA. Just for reference, of Giants with more than 180 PA's, Buster Posey has the next highest OBP at .326. Not saying he's a great player or that the Giants couldn't find more production at 1B, but the man is still the best Giants option for leading off.
Mike Yastrzemski RF- 2 for 2B, HR(11). BA= .268. YtY had been in a bit of a slump, but broke out of it big time with 2 XBH and 3 RBI's.
Evan Longoria 3B- 2 for 4. BA= .242. Longo has been slow getting started after coming off the IL. This would be a great time for him to get hot again.
Madison Bumgarner LHP- 1 for 1, 2 BB. BA= .149. If nothing else, Bummy extended an inning 3 times which is huge out of the 9-hole. He did score one of the Giants 5 runs.
Madison Bumgarner LHP- 7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.74. Took a no-hitter into the 6'th inning. Threw just 85 pitches in 7 innings. Bochy took him out because he threw extra between starts to correct whatever was wrong in his last start in Coors Field. Probably most pitchers would have just chalked it up to Coors and moved on. And this for a team that came this close to trading him away less than 10 days ago.

The win got the Giants a game closer to a Wild Card berth. They now trail the Brewers by 3 games with the Phils, Mets, Cardinals and D'Backs in between.

Madison Bumgarner can only pitch every 5'th day, so to make a serious run, the Giants have to get some good innings out of other pitchers. Tyler Beede would be one of those and he takes the hill tonight against Drew Smyly who shut the Giants down in Philly last week.

Steven Duggar and Shaun Anderson hit the IL with Sam Selman and Joey Rickard taking their place on the active roster.
