Game Wrap 8/27/2019: D'Backs 3 Giants 2

A bizarrely tight strike zone, bad BABIP luck and faltering bullpen combined to hand the Giants the Loss of the game and the 2-game series.  Key Lines:

Brandon Belt 1B- 2 for 4, 2B, SB(4).  BA= .229.  The Giants had 13 hard hits on the night.  Strangely enough, Brandon Belt who might have the worst BABIP luck in history, was the only Giants hitter whose hard hit balls went for hits in a weird night.

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.38.  Considering his strike zone was ridiculously tight, this was a strong performance by the Shark(in fairness, Mike Leake had the same strike zone and threw just 3 more pitches in 2.1 more IP).  This game was proof that a tight strike zone does not necessarily translate into a high scoring game.

Tyler Rogers RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, GO/AO= 3/0.  ERA= 0.00.  A dream come true!  I have wanted to see Rogers pitch in the majors for the longest time.  It finally happened and man, he did not disappoint!  3 soft groundball outs later and Kuip was gushing about his "new favorite pitcher" and Kruk was grudgingly agreeing that the "submanweenie" kid looked really good.  He only threw 11 pitches and I would have loved to see him go another inning, but with the Giants trailing, he was lifted for a PH in the bottom of the 8'th inning.

The Loss dropped the Giants to 5.5 games behind the Cubbies in the Wild Card race which is a lot of ground to make up in a little over a month.

The Giants get an unusual Wednesday off at home today before starting a 4-game home series against the Padres on Thursday with Dereck Rodriguez scheduled to face Cowboy Chris Paddack.

Notes from the Sluice Box:

The Giants made a bunch of moves before the game.  2B Scooter Gennett was released and hit the road.  Trevor Gott hit the IL with a Flexor Strain and Grade 1 UCL Sprain.  IF Abiatal Avelino paid the price for running through Ron Wotus' stop sign Monday night and got shipped back to Sacramento, which seems.....rather harsh.

The corresponding moves were bringing RHP Tyler Rogers up as well as IF Mauricio Dubon and OF Joey Rickard is back.  Dubon did not play in his first game on an MLB Active Roster, but I can't see much reason to have him up if he's going to just ride the pine.

  1. Mauricio Dubon had 2 MLB ABs in July for Milwaukee, one against the Giants in the Anderson v Anderson game. He wiffed.

  2. I was surprised by the Gennett cut. He's a veteran who will find his swing, but I guess they wanted to look at Dubon, he's the future. Wow 13 out of 25 players on current roster started the year in minors! I guess thats what happens in a transition year. I think they should have been more honest with the fans from the beginning regarding this being a transition year. Fans probably wouldnt be as upset with the 2019 off season moves if they did this. Schulman tweeted about it since spring training, so the team looking at so many young players hasn't surprised me. It's too bad that Avelino was sent down after making that baserunning gaffe, but he didn't do himself any favors playing in his 1st game.

  4. YtY in a bit of a slump:
    Last 7: 4-24 .167 1 HR
    Last 10: 11-41 .268 4 HR
    Last 15: 14-54 .259 6 HR
    Last 30: 29-108 .269 8 HR
Still a great rookie, hopefully the first of many, let's hope Dubon follows...
