The Giants have had more then their share of faceplants in recent years but they completed one of the worst ones in my memory ending on the losing end of a sweep at the hands of one of their rivals for a Wild Card playoff spot coming in. This game and series revived the toxic combination of falling starting pitchers giving up runs early and an offense incapable of mounting a comeback. Key Lines:
Brandon Crawford SS- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .226. Crawford was the only member of the Giants lineup to post 2 hits in the game. He drove in their only run in the bottom of the 9'th inning to make the final score appear to be much closer than the game really was.
Shaun Anderson RHP- 3 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 5.33. The big blow was a 3-run HR by Gerardo Parra. Anderson came out at the end of the inning with a blister on the middle finger of his pitching hand. Turns out it's been bothering him and he's been trying to nurse it along. It opened in the 3'rd inning. He may miss his next start which the Giants may cover with a 4-man rotation due to an off day.
Joe Ross RHP(Nationals)- 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 6.75. No matter how terrible the Ross boys are against the rest of the league, they are absolute kryptonite against the Giants. On the other hand, I guess you could say that about a lot of pitchers. Ugh!

The Loss dropped the Giants 4 games behind the Phillies for the 2'nd Wild Card playoff spot. After their sweep, the Nationals enjoy a 1.5 game lead over the Phillies for the first spot.
*********************************************************************************
Those Phillies come in for a 4-game series starting tomorrow with Madison Bumgarner getting the game 1 start against Phillies ace Aaron Nola in what is probably a must-win situation for the Giants.

Speaking of injuries.....Steven Duggar made a diving catch and sprained his previously surgerized left shoulder. He's probably headed to the IL. Alex Dickerson apparently had a setback or at least a lack of progress in rehabbing his oblique strain so won't be back in the Giants lineup anytime soon.

if anderson has to miss more than one start, they may need to hope torres is ready or go with a bullpen game
ReplyDeleteThey need to keeping letting the younger pitchers with SP Potential pitch with the Goal of having them experienced enough for 2020.........2020 has to be the Target.
ReplyDeleteDon't despair, Suarez is on the active roster, D-rod is on the 40-man and pitched well for Sac yesterday.
ReplyDeleteGarrett Williams?
