Dereck Rodriguez got pummeled the second time through the Padres lineup and rallies in the 8'th and 9'th innings fell short for the Giants. Key Lines:
Mike Yastrzemski RF- 0 for 3. BA= .264. YtY's hitless streak extended to 6 games. He is 0 for 18 in that span. He's been a bit on the streaky side. Don't forget at one point he was spared an option back to AAA because Austin Slater was too ill to play. I've been as captivated by his story as much as anyone. How great is it to witness a breakout season by the grandson of a Hall of Famer from the days as a kid listening to games on the radio? Have to remember there is probably a reason he is in his rookie season at age 29, though. Much like Dereck Rodriguez last year, there is a better than 50% chance this is the peak season of his career. He did make a spectacular diving catch in the second inning.
Brandon Belt 1B- 1 for 3, HR(15), BB. BA= .229. Signs of life in Belt's bat, 4 for 11 in his last 3 games.
Mauricio Dubon 2B- 1 for 3. BA= .200. Gets his first MLB hit. I'm not sure his bat plays at this level, but he showed he has the defensive chops in the 2'nd inning, laying out to snag a hard grounder to the left of 2B then getting up to throw out the runner by a large margin. It looked like he was breaking left to cover 2B on a SB attempt which helped him get to the ball, but still a very impressive play.
Dereck Rodriguez RHP- 5 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 5.49. DRod got through the lineup unscathed in the first 2 innings , but then gave up a single to the opposing pitcher with 1 out in the 3'rd, then Manuel Margot homered followed by doubles from Josh Naylor and The Hos. Game pretty much over at that point. Sadly, 5.49 is probably closer to DRod's true talent level than is career 3.90.

The Loss dropped the Giants 7 games off the pace in the Wild Card race, which is very likely too much to overcome.

Madison Bumgarner's velocity was down his last start, so will bear watching tonight as he takes on RHP Dinelson Lamet. Giants need to be very wary of any large long term deals with him, sad to say.

On the final day of August 2018, the Giants evened their record at 68-68 then "threw in the towel" sending last year's "soul" to the Yankees to complete an expensive saga to compete in the decade's last even year.
ReplyDeleteWhatever might be said of Zaidi's first year in seeming total control of the team, he did nothing as foolish as trading for McCutchen, but this year's team with 2 "aces" and not much else is freefalling to a Top Ten pick in next summer's amateur draft.
Not only are fans longing for a team that can hit and field we want players that show some life. Here is hoping that Dubon can anchor SS and or 2B for the next 7 years. The kid is fun to watch and has a delightful personality.
ReplyDeleteI suffer from fatigue for having watched the lackluster squad of Longoria, Crawford, Panik, Belt, and Posey for the last x number of years. That crew has no verve, pep, vitality. Depressing to watch these "professional" players. They never get upset, sho any emotion at all, give interviews in a monotone low-key voice.
I was excited when Arroyo was called up and while his AAA rival Bellinger tore up MLB pitching our call-up was a bust.
Dubon is the first young IF prospect since Arroyo to get a call up.I sure hope he sticks because this kid plays an exciting brand of baseball and he has a wonderful, playful personality.
If Yaz and Dubon start next year and contribute 2019 will go down as a VG rebuilding year - I almost said Great rebuilding year but the team has had trouble finding a reliable young starter. A great year would mean Beede or Logan Webb become front line starters.
Mike Yastrzemski: something clicked for him since last season -- did he go to launch school over the winter?
ReplyDeleteBetween Sac and SF this year he is into his 30's of HRs but never hit more than 15 in a year before, sometimes fewer than double digits.
He's almost SF's Muncy (BTW they were born just 2 days apart in 1990) except Max started hitting HRs last year.
Can it last? He has the sweet swing.
