Let's see, the Giants have historically struggled against Patrick Corbin, lefthand pitchers in general, on east coast road trips and getaway games. So they won today, right? Um....no! It was a perfect storm of bad karma today and the Giants predictably lost as old nemesis, Patrick Corbin, struck out 9 Giants in 7.2 IP, on his way to allowing just 1 run in a game that was not as close as the score makes it look. Key Lines:
Evan Longoria 3B- 2 for 3, 2B, HBP. ERA= .219. Longo got 2 of the Giants 5 hits and accounted for both runs with a Run and RBI.
Drew Pomeranz LHP- 4.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 4.82. Pomeranz seems to be settling into a "five and dive" routine, but didn't quite get there this time as he was lifted after a bases-loaded walk with 2 outs in the 5'th inning after throwing 88 pitches.
Ryan Additon HP Ump- Let's just say the Giants were not fans if his strike zone as Brandon Belt and Bruce Bochy both got ejected for arguing a called third strike that went against Belt. Seems like the Giants thought Steven Duggar got robbed too. If the strike zone box on the TV is accurate, Belt was called out twice on pitches clearly out of the zone and Tyler Austin once. Duggar's called strike 3 was right on the outside edge.

With the Loss, the Giants fell 4.5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West and trail in the Wild Card race by 3.5 games.

The Giants are the only team left in MLB who haven't scored in the 1st inning.
ReplyDeleteWhen the 3 hitters at the top of the lineup have OBP's of .267, .295, & .286, there's a fair chance they won't even get a runner on, much less a runner home.
Baseball-Reference has only Belt (0.4) and Pillar (0.3) with oWAR's above 0.1!
5 of the 7 batters with WAR's greater than 0.0 are due to their dWAR rather than oWAR.
How far will pitching and fielding get you? Nowhere without scoring.
