A  Augusta Greenjackets powered past the Ashville Tourists 9-5:

Aaron Bond RF- 1 for 3, 2 BB, SB(1).  BA= .333.
Diego Rincones LF- 3 for 5.  BA= .600.

Jacob Gonzalez 3B- 1 for 3, HR(1), 2 BB.  BA= .333.
Shane Matheny 2B- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .500.
Ismael Munguia DH- 1 for 5, 3B.  BA= .200.

Jesus Tona RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Too much good stuff!  Diego Rincones picks right up where he left off last year in Salem-Keizer with a 3-hit game out of bed.  Great to see Jacob Gonzalez homer in his first game after very rough first full season.  Sean Hjelle's line looks good.  What about Jesus Tona?  Converted catcher was lights out last year in S-K and starts out his first full season the same way.

  1. Opening Day statement!
Tona may be smaller than Timmy L -- will that play again?

  2. At least the Junior Giants are scoring runs and winning games. The entire Big Club core needs to be replaced soon!

And BOSH is showing them the way as he will be the first to retire.

  3. It was a chilly overcast night in Visalia as the Little Giants took the opener before a packed crowd. Joey Bart drove in the first run with an opposite field single that sounded like it came off a swing that caused a broken bat. Our two top prospects both looked good, as did many of the other Giants. Johnson and McPherson are both very fast, with each hitting a triple and McPherson adding a double. Helio's sacrifice fly was hit to deep right center field and would have been extra bases except for a highlight reel catch by the Rawhide center fielder Jake McCarthy. On the pitching front, Marte had significant trouble finding the strike zone in the first inning when he walked two batters. After the first inning he settled down - he was hitting 96 occasionally and was consistently at 94 with his fastball and had an offspeed pitch at around 86 that he managed to get over for strikes in the 3rd inning. Raffi Vizcaino was hitting 95 with his fastball and had good command. DJ Myers was effective with a fastball that hit 91 and a variety of offspeed stuff including a curveball that hit 74 MPH. It was nice to see a Giant victory in Visalia, a rare thing these past few years. APGiantsfan

  4. For the Giants this season will be all about putting the chess pieces together so the team can legitimately contend beginning in 2021. Any success the team experiences in 2019 and 2020 will be awesome, but expecting it requires a level of optimism that is fanatical - that's why they call us "fans." LOL

In any case, wow! What a great start for the organization's minor league affiliates. I agree with Doc, the Jacob Gonzalez dinger is big. If he can put last year behind him and get off to a good start in Augusta, it will be a boost to the organization.

    1. If Jacob's bat plays out for MLB what is his position? 3B? LF? 1B?

    2. Position - Power Righthanded bat. Pretty sure there is an opening or two at Oracle Park.
