Gotta hand it to the offense. Last night they put up a 5-spot in the 3'rd inning and it wasn't enough, so what did they do tonight? Well, they put up a 6-spot in the 2'nd inning. This time it was enough and they didn't even need the add-on run they got in the 4'th inning. Key Lines:
Kevin Pillar CF- 1 for 3, 2B, SF. BA= .128. Pillar drove in 4 runs for the second night in a row, this time with a bases-loaded double and drove in 3 and a SF. The last Giants player to drive in 8 runs over 2 consecutive games? Barry Bonds with 9 in 2002 per sfgiants.com!
Tyler Austin 1B- 1 for 3, BB. BA= .333. I'd feel better about acquiring Austin if it didn't result in Brandon Belt moving to LF, but hey, no dingers but 2 hits and 2 RBI's in 2 games.
Derek Holland LHP- 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 9 K's. ERA= 3.38. Holland dominated the Padres by owning the inside corner. So far he's picked up where he left off last season and making the Giants re-signing him look great.

The Win moved the Giants into sole possession of 4'th place in the NL West just 4 games behind the division leading Dodgers who dropped their second in a row to the Cardinals.

I think I read that Austin is very actively working on regaining such OF skills as he has, after playing no OF this year in ST. The plan is to move him to LF when the requisite muscle memory returns, and to keep Belt where he belongs, at 1B.
ReplyDeleteI hope so.
DeleteGood game, good Pitching and some additions pay off, now if just The Core could wake up.
ReplyDeleteBelt would do just fine in LF if Austin can supply this Team with some power, moving to 1B for late Inning Defense if we have the lead.
ReplyDeleteOminous first inning: Padres run themselves out of a score with 2 runners thrown out, Giants go meekly 3 up, 3 down.
ReplyDeleteLucchesi, looking for his 3rd scoreless outing managed only to get Holland out in the 2nd of the first 8 hitters as Pillar and Austin rounded out the scoring with hits.
After a very shaky 1st, Holland was pretty invincible until giving up a HR in his 7th inning as Bochy preserves his 13-man staff, 8 relievers accumulating 40 innings innings over 13 days, about 2.5 innings per week per reliever
RP should be a strength on this Team, probably the only strength so Boch should be able to limit his SP to 5-6 Innings or prevent them from seeing a Batter for the 3rd time.
ReplyDeletePer Kruk and Kuip, Giants bullpen has lowest ERA in MLB so far. I know. LOL ERA and Sample Size, but still.....
DeleteThey will remain string if used judiciously. Strong does not mean they will give you 4 IP/game. We will still need QS from starters.
DeleteOne disadvantage for RP is that Moronta is the only one with options, and he is a high-leverage pitcher. Giants cannot keep moving a few pitchers up and down so that they rets in AAA and we always have fresh arms.
6 Innings max
DeleteI like Internet managers.
DeleteHave an excellent W & L average :)
DeleteIt's become very clear to many, the late learners that the 3rd time a SP faces a batter increase the chances of something bad happens.
Not crazy about Austin at 1B and belt in the OF, but we'll see....
ReplyDeleteHave given Farhan heat for most of his OF moves so far so, to be fair, have to say the Pillar deal is lookin even better then it did at the onset (which was good)..And Duggar needs some breaks...
And resigning HOLLANd, who looks real good again, wasn't a bad move wither....

Pillar and Austin have brought some new hope, that's for sure. Let's see if they can get above .500 by the end of April, that could happen quickly with another win vs SD today and a sweep of the Rockies!
DeleteWell I take that one back. Pillar and Austin still inspiring but Posey and Belt brought us all back to earth today...not much out of Duggar - does he need to play every day to keep hot at the plate?
DeleteWould you rather have Garcia as back up catcher or Kratz in SF? I think we need Garcia's bat.
ReplyDeleteI'd rather have Vogt than Kratz and keep Garcia getting the ABs every day with the Cats. Vogt gives you a L/R platoon split behind the plate, plus can play 1B (so can Belt, Austin, Posey and Aramis - but not Kratz). Garcia is still there in case Posey goes on the DL for a while.
DeleteIf Bart is catcher of future, why do you care Aramis get everyday AB in AAA, he is a sick talent & we need youth & offense NOW
